Rama Safti, an Indian aristocrat trained as a doctor in the United States, returns to the remote village of Ranchipur to serve its impoverished residents. His mission is complicated by Lady Edwina and her volatile, alcoholic former lover, painter Tom Ransome. When a devastating earthquake, flooding and a plague strike, the unlikely group must unite and confront the disaster together.
