During the Peninsular War, Napoleon's forces overrun large parts of Spain and the siege line collapses, leaving a massive siege cannon behind. French cavalry are dispatched to locate and recover the weapon. The cannon's loss becomes a strategic flashpoint for both sides.

Captain Anthony Trumbull, a Royal Navy ordnance officer, travels to the Spanish headquarters to ensure the cannon is handed over to British forces. He finds the headquarters evacuated and the area occupied by a guerrilla band led by Miguel. The mission shifts to tracking the gun’s path across hostile territory.

Miguel shows Trumbull the cannon’s location at the bottom of a steep ravine. He will aid moving it only if it is used against Ávila’s walls, which he longs to capture. A wary alliance forms between the two men, shadowed by mutual distrust.

Tensions grow as Trumbull and Miguel clash over strategy, and Juana, Miguel’s mistress, becomes enamored with Trumbull. Her relationship adds a volatile element to the fragile alliance. The trio’s dynamics influence decisions in the field.

General Jouvet, the French commander in Ávila, orders the execution of ten Spanish hostages daily until information about the cannon is surrendered. The menace of reprisals intensifies the guerrillas’ resolve. The countdown alters every choice on the countryside march.

The cannon is recovered and begins a long, arduous journey across Spain toward Ávila. Guerrilla fighters and local supporters endure harsh conditions to keep the gun moving. The mission’s logistics and morale are repeatedly tested.

Jouvet’s artillery threatens a key mountain pass the guerrillas must traverse. The group fights through the threat with heavy losses and moments of near collapse. Support from locals helps shelter the gun from a potentially crushing setback.

Once in a safer position, the cannon is hidden inside Ávila’s cathedral while repairs are carried out. Later, it is disguised as an ornamental processional platform during Holy Week to evade French detection. The ruse buys crucial time for the guerrillas.

French officers are informed of the cathedral cannon’s location, but when they arrive, the cannon has already been repaired and moved. The deception allows the guerrillas to advance their plans unimpeded for a time.

The cannon arrives at the guerrilla camp on the plains outside Ávila. Trumbull and Miguel prepare to assault the city, aware that the defenders are well entrenched and numerically superior. The moment tests their resolve.

Ávila is defended by strong walls, eighty cannon, and a French garrison. Trumbull explains that the assault will be costly, with heavy casualties for the attackers. Despite the odds, the guerrillas’ determination remains high.

Trumbull attempts to dissuade Juana from participating in the assault, but she chooses to go with the guerrillas the next day. Her presence heightens personal stakes for both sides. The battlefield becomes a stage for courage and romance under fire.

The siege commences and the siege cannon fires repeatedly, slowly breaching a section of Ávila’s walls. The guerrillas push through the breach with heavy losses, overrunning the French forces in the streets. The tide of battle shifts decisively in their favor.

General Jouvet is killed as the final French troops are overwhelmed in the town square. With the last resistance crushed, the guerrillas claim victory and seize control of the city and the cannon. The symbolic end of French strength in Ávila is marked by the square’s silence.

Trumbull bids farewell to a dying Juana and places Miguel’s body at the foot of Saint Teresa’s statue. After securing the cannon for its long journey to England, Trumbull leaves Ávila with troubled memories of the campaign. The victory is tempered by personal losses and the cost of war.
