In 18th-century Quebec, Francois le Gardeur [David La Haye] returns to his hometown to visit his father, only to discover that his death leaves him not only grief but a business inheritance that is foggy and potentially compromised. He places his trust in his father’s lawyer to sort out everything, including the creditors who have pressed for an investigation, yet the path ahead is muddy and fraught with doubt.
Francois soon finds himself drawn to Marie-Loup Carignan, Noémie Godin-Vigneau the town’s healer, and a spark of romance blooms amid the tension of his uncertain future. He is delighted when he notices her stand up for an Indian girl, Acoona, Bianca Gervais against a racist accusation, and the two share a quiet, sincere sympathy for the local tribe, often speaking its language together. Unlike his friend Xavier Maillard, who serves the local authorities, Francois manages to win his position and gain the affection of the beloved healer, at least for a time.
As their relationship deepens—Francois growing into a lover of Marie-Loup—their world begins to close in. He is forced to flee when the authorities uncover illegal dealings connected to his newly inherited enterprise, making him a target of suspicion and blame. He hides in the woods, helped by sympathetic Indigenous communities who attempt to keep him safe and to facilitate contact with Marie-Loup through a letter. He waits for her to join him so they can escape together, away from the reach of those who would judge or prosecute him.
Marie-Loup, however, cannot read the letter herself and seeks guidance from the local priest, Father Thomas Blondeau Gérard Depardieu. The priest’s counsel takes a decisive turn: he tells Marie-Loup that she has been forsaken by Francois and urges her to marry Xavier Maillard, a decision that changes the course of all their lives. Gripped by desperation, Marie-Loup agrees to the ceremony, yet she withholds conjugal rights from Xavier, delaying what could have been an easy exit from the tangled web they find themselves in.
Weeks pass, and Xavier visits Francois in his hidden refuge. A bitter confrontation arises as Xavier blames his rival for his own misfortune, and a violent fight leaves Francois gravely wounded and presumed dead by those who find him. When Xavier returns to Marie-Loup, his temper remains unchecked, and he issues threats that cast a long shadow over the community.
Xavier’s death is soon questioned by his comrades, who refuse to accept it as an accident. Marie-Loup is accused of murder and witchcraft, a charge that grows heavier with each passing day. Francois, trying to protect her, fails to intervene in time, and his own arrest follows as the British authorities—who had taken control of the former French colony—choose not to intervene openly, fearing to reignite hostilities. The outcome hangs in the balance as the powers at play weigh the costs of truth, loyalty, and love in a turbulent era.
