Don Jose, a Spanish army officer stationed in Seville, falls in love with the enigmatic gypsy Carmen. When he discovers she has been unfaithful with his lieutenant, he murders the officer and flees the city with her. After recovering from his wounds, he is compelled to adopt the life of a bandit.
