The Nasty Girl (1990) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of The Nasty Girl (1990), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

A German high school student, Sonja, Lena Stolze in a fictionalized portrait of Anna Rosmus, wins an essay contest and embarks on a trip to Paris. When Martin Wegmus, Robert Giggenbach, arrives to teach physics at Sonja’s school, one of her classmates falls for him, and a shy, almost accidental, kiss marks the beginning of a complicated dynamic. The teacher promises to return for her, hinting at a future connection that will color her memory of that winter break.

The following year, Sonja re-enters the contest, choosing the topic “My Town During the Third Reich.” Her diligent research opens a door into a reality that many in her seemingly spotless community would rather keep quiet. She discovers that her picture-perfect town had been intimately involved with the Nazi era, with nearly all of the city’s prominent families having been members of the Nazi party long before it overtook the country. The more she digs, the more she encounters resistance: local authorities stonewall her efforts, attempting to muzzle her findings and preserve the town’s pride.

Undeterred, Sonja presses on. Her scholarship reveals that there were eight concentration camps in the region and that Jews were expelled from the town, with their properties confiscated. This dark history challenges the community’s memory and forcefully tests the limits of what residents are willing to acknowledge. The pursuit puts Sonja at odds with neighbors, relatives, and officials who see her work as an affront to their identity.

As time passes, Sonja’s life takes a personal turn: she marries Martin, and the townspeople begin to think she has abandoned her relentless scholarly quest. Yet she persists, balancing family life with a growing hunger to uncover every layer of the town’s past. She bears two daughters and eventually pursues higher studies in history at the university, steadily returning to the archives that hold fragments of the past. The quest to access those archives becomes a legal and moral battleground, as she wins court cases that grant her access, even if she must sometimes rely on wits and persistence to obtain the exact documents she seeks.

The hostility from the community intensifies into threats and physical intimidation, and the pressure to abandon her work grows ever heavier. Her husband feels the strain of daily life as he becomes the primary caregiver for the children, a role that complicates their partnership and underscores the broader tensions tearing at their town. The family survives a bomb attack, a stark reminder of the era’s lingering peril, yet Sonja’s resolve remains unshaken and her research continues to push forward.

In the end, the town’s stance toward its past begins to shift. The community even erects a bust in Sonja’s honor at the town hall, a gesture meant to honor memory and reconciliation. Yet for Sonja, the act feels hollow and potentially silencing—a step taken by others to control the narrative rather than to honor the truth she has uncovered. She rejects the tribute, choosing to continue her work and keep the focus on the difficult task of remembering and learning from history, even when that history unsettles cherished myths.

This is a story about courage, persistence, and the fraught process of confronting a community’s past. It tracks a young woman’s intellectual and emotional journey as she challenges complacency, navigates personal sacrifice, and ultimately confronts the complicated legacy of atrocity with a steadfast commitment to truth.
