The Monkey King

The Monkey King ends with the titular character’s long-standing rebellion and quest for acceptance reaching a turning point. After years of defying the gods and attempting to prove his worth, Monkey becomes obsessed with achieving immortality to finally belong to their world. He goes through a series of dangerous trials, including erasing his death date in hell and seeking the Elixir of Immortality, which ultimately grants him full immortality. However, his relentless pursuit of power and recognition leads to chaos, especially when he steals back his powerful staff from the Dragon King and confronts him in a fierce battle. During this fight, Monkey’s aggressive nature almost threatens to destroy everything, but it is Buddha who intervenes, calming him and challenging him to see that true strength lies in humility and understanding that he is not the most powerful being in the universe.

In the final moments, Monkey is shown sulking in a cave, still restless from his actions and unresolved feelings. Lin, a kind and caring figure, visits him one last time, returning his staff and sharing a heartfelt apology. Their friendship signifies that Monkey still has the capacity for change. As she leaves, Monkey is trapped in a mountain for 500 years, a punishment and a test of his growth. Yet, this imprisonment also sets the stage for his eventual redemption. When he is finally released for the journey to the West, he remains as mischievous as ever but has begun to understand that true heroism includes kindness, humility, and the importance of genuine bonds. The ending leaves viewers with the hope that Monkey’s chaos can be tempered by wisdom and love as he embarks on his next adventure.
