Sun Wukong, portrayed by Yang Li, the Monkey King, bears a heavy sentence: 500 years trapped beneath a mountain as punishment for rebelling against the heavens. When a determined monk named Tang Sanzang frees him, a wary but growing mutual respect forms between them, and the Monkey King agrees to aid on the monk’s sacred pilgrimage to the West, vowing to become his disciple. Along the road, the unlikely trio is joined by Pigsy and Sandy, whose presence adds courage, comic relief, and steadfast loyalty to the journey.
As the group travels, a dark threat lingers in the shadows. A cadre of demons schemes to attack Monk Tang and feast on his flesh, believing such an act will grant them immortality. The White Bone Demon, Baigujing, arrives to spy on the travelers and warns the others that the Monkey King is Tang’s formidable disciple. She hatches a cunning plan to subdue him by presenting herself as an innocent, beautiful woman, hoping to trap the Monkey King with charm and illusion.
When Baigujing appears in disguise and asks to join their travels, the Monkey King sees through the ruse and strikes at her. The blow leads Tang to scold him for attacking someone who seems harmless, creating tension within the group. Undeterred, they press on, but the demons continue to test them. The Monkey King’s vigilance is tested again when a young child claiming to have lost his mother appears. This time he once again discerns the demon behind the disguise and attacks, yet the demon manages to outsmart him and escapes, transforming into an elderly man in front of Monk Tang. The Monkey King’s fierce assault in this new guise prompts Tang to intervene, defending the old man and allowing the demon to slip away. The monk, shaken by these confrontations, begins to doubt the Monkey King and ultimately rejects him as his disciple, resulting in a painful rift as the two part ways.
Departing from Tang, the Monkey King flies back to his homeland and discovers a stark truth: his people have suffered under heaven’s wrath for half a millennium while he was trapped beneath the mountain. Moved by their plight, he calls upon the gods to help rebuild his wounded home, signaling a turn toward responsibility and leadership.
Meanwhile, Tang, Pigsy, and Sandy press onward and eventually reach a Buddhist temple where Baigujing launches another devastating strike. Tang and Sandy are captured, while Pigsy escapes to warn the Monkey King. The Monkey King, instead of returning immediately, chooses to pursue a covert rescue, following in secret to protect his vow and companions. In a bold ruse, he disguises himself to appear as Baigujing’s mother—the reference to the Nine-Tailed Vixen from the Golden and Silver Horned Kings adventure in the original novel—and uses this ploy to outsmart the demon, defeat her, and free Monk Tang. Witnessing the Monkey King’s honesty and courage, Tang finally forgives him, and the pair reconcile. With trust restored, they continue their arduous journey together, wiser and more united than before.
