Augustine Lofthouse, a dedicated scientist, embarks on an ambitious quest to find habitable planets for humanity. His relentless pursuit of knowledge often overshadows his personal relationships, particularly with Jean Sullivan.

At a prestigious gala, Augustine meets Jean Sullivan and they enter into a passionate romantic relationship. However, their connection begins to deteriorate as Augustine becomes more consumed by his scientific endeavors.

Following a pregnancy scare, Jean realizes she cannot cope with Augustine's emotional unavailability. Unable to connect with him, she ultimately decides to leave their relationship behind.

By the year 2049, Earth has suffered a catastrophic event leading to massive population decline and environmental devastation. Augustine finds himself isolated in the Arctic, facing a terminal illness that requires dialysis.

Despite the grim circumstances and a deteriorating body, Augustine refuses to abandon his post. He feels a strong sense of duty to warn any remaining active space missions about the dire situation unfolding on Earth.

As he attempts to reach out to the active spacecraft, Augustine finds that most missions have been decommissioned and struggles with a weak signal to the spacecraft Æther, which is returning from K-23.

During a lonely night in his Arctic base, Augustine discovers a mute young girl named Iris. Their bond begins to grow as they embark on a mission to reach another base in hopes of contacting Æther.

As they journey through the harsh Arctic environment, Augustine's health begins to deteriorate, especially after he loses his vital dialysis equipment. The environment proves merciless, testing their resolve to find help.

Upon reaching another base, Augustine manages to establish a fleeting contact with Æther. Unfortunately, their communication is cut short due to a sudden meteor strike, plunging them back into uncertainty.

Meanwhile, aboard the spacecraft Æther, the crew, including the pregnant Sully, is unaware of the catastrophic events on Earth. They face their own life-or-death situation during a hazardous spacewalk.

During the spacewalk, a meteor strike leads to a tragic accident, claiming the life of their flight engineer Maya. Despite Sanchez's heroic attempts to save her, the crew must grapple with the aftermath of their loss.

After the tragedy, Sully manages to reach out to Augustine for guidance. He encourages her to abandon the dying Earth and instead pursue a hopeful future on K-23.

In a twist of destiny, Sully discovers that she shares a deep connection with Augustine through her mother, Jean. This emotional revelation allows them to finally connect, highlighting the bonds of family amid chaos.

As Augustine's health continues to decline, he shares heartfelt words with Sully, expressing pride in finally meeting her. Sully and Commander Adewole emerge from the crisis as the last hope for humanity's future on K-23.
