The Man from Nowhere

In a stark black-and-white prologue set high in the Pamir Mountains, Vladimir Porazhayev, a young anthropologist, pursues the legend of the Tapi tribe despite the skepticism of his expedition leader, Krokhalyov. A reckless ascent ends in a plunge through a ravine, where a blow to the head shatters his consciousness and launches the narrative into color, shifting the tone from documentary to intimate adventure.

Porazhayev awakens to a startling turn of fate: he is a captive among the Tapi, tied to a post with a rebellious tribesman named Chudak. He watches a tribal council led by a chief who bears a striking resemblance to his former mentor, and, using the tribe’s superstition about a passing satellite, he negotiates the freedom of himself and his companion. The bold escape culminates in a return to Moscow, with Chudak coming along as Porazhayev’s unlikely protégé.

Back in the city, the naive yet curious figure of Chudak undertakes a string of misadventures as he tries to adapt to modern life. He is mistaken for an athlete and even wins a local race, while his attempts to blend into urban civilization spark pandemonium. Porazhayev, acting as mentor, presses the message that true humanity grows from steady work and communal effort, a philosophy that sits uneasily with some elements of contemporary skepticism. Meanwhile, Krohalyov, convinced that Porazhayev is dead, begins to pursue Lena, Porazhayev’s romantic interest, a pursuit that adds personal stakes to the scientific quest.

The plot thickens at a scientific conference where Porazhayev presents compelling evidence of the Tapi tribe’s existence, challenging the doubters and reawakening tension with Krohalyov. In a moment of growing tension, Chudak’s frustration nearly ends in a reckless confrontation with Krohalyov, underscoring the widening gap between belief and disbelief.

In a surprising and comic turn, Chudak—refusing to abandon his mentor—sneaks aboard a rocket with Porazhayev, and the two set off on an unplanned journey beyond Earth. The voyage becomes a blunt sparring match as they bicker midflight, trading quips as they careen toward an unknown destination, only to crash-land back in the Pamirs. Chudak renews his vow to return to his tribe and teach them the ways of humanity, bringing a sense of cyclical return to the story.

The film closes with a black-and-white epilogue revealing that the astonishing sequence was a dream of Porazhayev. He is awakened by his fellow expedition members, but his resolve remains undiminished: he will continue the search for the elusive Tapi tribe, leaving audiences with a blend of humor, wonder, and a persistent invitation to imagine what lies beyond the mountains.
