In the town of Baltese, the people were enveloped in a shadow cast by the devastating effects of war. This conflict had eradicated their belief in magic and warmth, leaving a stark reality where domesticated animals were only valued for their produce.

Peter, a young orphan, was raised by Vilna Lutz, a weathered soldier who sought to prepare him for the harsh realities of life. Despite his efforts, Vilna carried the painful burden of having failed to save Peter's sister, Adele, from the ravages of war.

On an errand to fetch bread, Peter encountered a Fortune Teller who evoked a glimmer of hope by claiming that his sister was still alive. She advised him that to find her, he must follow an elephant, sparking his determination to embark on a quest.

During a magician’s unspectacular performance at the opera, the sudden arrival of an elephant shifted the prevailing gloom in Baltese. This unexpected event reignited the townspeople's spirits, temporarily overshadowing the weight of their sorrows.

Meanwhile, Adele, who was raised by Sister Marie, had her own dreams about the elephant leading her to her brother. Sister Marie felt a deep sense of guilt for taking Adele away from the war-torn city, which added another layer of complexity to their intertwining tales.
