Monte, portrayed by Morgan Freeman, is an acclaimed Western novelist who, having lost his wife, finds himself in a tumultuous state of discontent and alcohol dependency in his later years. Seeking solace, he retreats to the tranquil resort town of Belle Isle for the summer, where he is tasked with dogsitting at a quaint cottage.
In this picturesque setting, he becomes acquainted with his charming neighbor, Charlotte, played by Virginia Madsen. She is a single mother trying to navigate her way through a divorce while juggling her three daughters, aged 6 to 15. Among them is the imaginative middle child, Finn, who embarks on a quest to construct a wooden raft destined for a small island in the nearby harbor.
Despite being confined to a wheelchair, Monte manages to venture into town by bus for his bourbon fix, interacting brusquely but not unfriendly with the locals, including a man who invites him to attend a memorial service for a recently deceased neighbor. There, he crosses paths with Finn, and she quickly learns about his novels featuring a recurring cowboy character named Jubal. During the memorial, Monte reluctantly agrees to read a statement in honor of the deceased.
On his way home, Monte encounters a young man named Carl, who has a mental handicap. Encouraged by Carl’s mother to foster social interactions, Monte sees potential in him as a sidekick. Finn’s enthusiasm leads her to ask Monte for storytelling lessons, and he reveals that he has been faking his paralysis in an effort to sue an insurance company, igniting her fascination with the power of imagination.
As their bond strengthens, Charlotte invites Monte to dinner, where a subtle chemistry ignites between them, even more so as Charlotte showcases her piano skills. During the evening, their conversation takes a poignant turn when she inquires about his cessation of writing. Through the lens of Jubal, Monte shares an allegory of how writing was once his only way of living out desires he could no longer pursue.
To fuel Finn’s desire for storytelling, Monte encourages her to observe the world around her and fill in the gaps with her imagination. Initially frustrated, Finn gradually discovers newfound creativity and narrates a story inspired by an adventure with Carl, gaining Monte’s approval as she embraces her writing skills.
The story unfolds further when Flora, Finn’s younger sister, celebrates a birthday that their father fails to attend. In an effort to lift her spirits, Monte invents a tale about an elephant and a family of mice that Charlotte later reads to Flora, recognizing the narrative’s deeper meaning related to their family dynamics. This revelation hints at Monte’s feelings for Charlotte.
As the summer progresses, Finn completes her raft and embarks on a journey with Carl and her older sister to explore an island, where they uncover hidden writings from Charlotte’s childhood. However, Finn’s disappointment grows when she discovers Monte’s secretive writing endeavors, questioning why he stopped writing about Jubal. In his reflections, Monte finds himself falling for Charlotte, penning a story that subtly hints at his burgeoning feelings.
An unexpected visit from Monte’s editor brings both encouragement and tension, especially with a famous actor vying for the rights to Jubal’s character. Despite the allure of fame, Monte firmly declares the character is not for sale, citing his newfound happiness and desire not to complicate his life.
In a enchanting dream, Monte envisions himself dancing with Charlotte under the moonlight, a romantic fantasy that contrasts with his reality. The day arrives when Charlotte asks him to take care of her daughters, leading to a heartfelt moment where he shares the story of his past—how he became paralyzed due to a tragic accident and how Jubal was born from his longing for a life unfulfilled. He emotionally reveals that Finn has given him hope and a sense of movement again.
As the summer nears its end, both Monte and Charlotte confess their deepening affections in a profound kiss before she departs. With time running out, Monte decides to give up alcohol and gifts Carl his prized cowboy hat, encouraging him to embrace his individuality rather than shadowing others.
Finn, eager to learn, is ecstatic when Monte presents her with a retyped final page of one of his books, a gesture that acknowledges her role in his revitalization. As he prepares to say goodbye, the girls and Charlotte bid him a heartfelt farewell, and Flora gifts him a painting of an elephant—an emblem of their shared experiences.
As autumn sets in, the family adjusts to a new routine, with Charlotte planting pumpkins in their garden. In an unexpected turn of events, she receives a message from Monte explaining that he has sold the rights to Jubal and used the earnings to purchase the cottage he once rented during the summer. This unexpected twist leads her and her daughters to rush over to reunite with Monte, filled with joy and excitement, marking a new chapter in their intertwined lives.
