Jennifer Parker is a 30-year-old art curator who has just quit her job to pursue her own gallery. The entire story unfolds inside the kitchen and adjoining dining area of her home, a space she shares with her longtime friend and roommate, Kenny. On the eve of her birthday, she is not looking forward to the party planned by Stan, a friend who harbors unrequited feelings for her. The mood is complicated by hard truths: her longtime boyfriend, Paul, confesses the night before that he has cheated on her with multiple women, and her younger sister Penny is pregnant from a casual fling and is preparing for an abortion later in the week.

As guests arrive, Jennifer tries to leverage the party as a chance to push forward her gallery ambitions by inviting Vladimir, an artist she hopes will become a cornerstone client. Inside the kitchen, the dynamics crackle with personal tensions. Kenny reveals his wish to turn years of casual closeness with Penny into something more serious, a sign of the shifting relationships circling the birthday night. Among the arrivals are Amanda and Kim, friends of Jennifer; Kim drops a bombshell—she slept with Paul and has bought an expensive gift to apologize, which only heightens the awkwardness. In conversations with her best friend Pam, Jennifer processes the revelation, while Kim and Amanda re-enter and Kim awkwardly confirms the affair, prompting anger that sends her storming off.

The atmosphere tightens as Pam hints to Amanda that she is aware of the affair, and the older friends Peter and Andre chime in, revealing more about the tangled loyalties. Amid the chaos, Kenny learns from Penny that she is pregnant and contemplates whether he could be the father, a spark that adds another layer to the night’s already fragile balance. Despite the revelations, Jennifer chooses to seize the moment and enjoy her party, determined to extract some joy from a night that has already brought so much upheaval.

The party escalates when Stan revisits the topic of Paul and Jennifer’s breakup. Penny sees an opportunity for herself, hoping this moment might turn into something more with Stan. The tension erupts when Kim and Amanda reappear, and Paul arrives to retrieve his laptop after faking interest in Kim to keep Amanda in play. He is caught in a compromising position, kissing Amanda as Kim is away. Stan walks in on the scene and informs Penny, who retaliates by spraying both Paul and Amanda with a fire extinguisher and hurling the laptop out the window. The fireworks don’t end there: Jennifer, off-screen, glimpses a moment with Marco, an Italian exchange student who doesn’t speak much English, before receiving a voicemail from Vladimir that he won’t attend the party and will instead stay with Pace. The news leaves Jennifer worried about the future of her gallery.

In a further twist, Kim carries Paul into the dining room after he hurts his ankle while climbing a fence to retrieve his laptop, a scene that heightens the night’s chaos. Jennifer questions why Paul confessed his cheating before her birthday and hears him admit that he wanted to spare her anger by being honest. With Kim and Paul leaving, Penny drags Jennifer away, and the backyards erupt as rival bands collide in a chaotic display outside. The moment of truth comes when Stan urges Jennifer to blow out the candles on her birthday cake, a cake whose name had already been smeared from Jenni to Jennifer. Frustrated and overwhelmed, Jennifer pushes the cake into Stan’s shirt off-screen, and while he heads to clean up, Penny mocks Stan’s obvious crush, sparking a harsh exchange in which Stan belittles Penny as an attention seeker and mocks her abortion decision. The party ends with Penny taking the lead, ending the night with Stan leaving in frustration.

The following morning, the fallout settles into a quieter, more hopeful tone: Kenny and Penny have decided to stay together and raise the baby. As Jennifer begins to tidy up, she discovers the portfolio of Brent, a photographer hired by Stan for the party, and she recognizes real talent in his work. She leaves a message for Brent to consider showcasing his photographs in her fledgling gallery, and a cautious, optimistic smile crosses her face as she begins to imagine a future built on opportunity rather than chaos. The night’s emotional wreckage yields a seed of possibility, suggesting that art and ambition might yet help heal the bonds frayed by a birthday night that neither Jennifer nor her friends will soon forget.
