In the mid 1960s Philadelphia, Perry Parker, Joe Pantoliano is a local dance-show host who dreams of rivaling the big names, while the city’s youth buzz with music, ambition, and a hint of rebellion. On the other side of town, Del Green, Donovan Leitch, an honors student with a naturally magnetic presence, longs to dance with Vicky, Jennifer Runyon, the show’s most popular dancer who attends a parochial school. Yet Vicky’s heart belongs to her dancing partner, the fiery Dugan, Scott Plank, whose temper and charm create a complicated triangle that pulls Del into a world he’s eager to join.
Del’s moment comes when Dugan misses a show. Seizing the chance, Del steps in as Vicky’s partner, and the first on-stage pairing is a hit. To his astonishment, Del’s peers and school friends see him as “alive” and hip in a way they never expected. But Del’s excitement clashes with the steady pull of his next‑door neighbor and childhood friend Gail, Wendy Gazelle, who quietly guards a crush on him and worries about the fast crowd he’s entering.
Now part of the “In Crowd,” the group of show’s featured dancers, Del is asked to attend their evening gatherings with Vicky. He picks Vicky up at her home, where her father Tiny, a policeman, greets the sight of her with a bright, hopeful look at her college-bound future. The contrast with Dugan—who can barely read—is sharp, and the tension between the two men over Vicky’s affections grows. At each outing, Vicky slips away with Dugan, leaving Del waiting and wondering where he stands. Del feels used by Vicky’s secret romance, and he refuses to be part of a romance that’s hidden from everyone else. Yet, as the days pass, Del and Vicky manage to reconcile, and he discovers that Vicky and Dugan are plotting to run off to Hollywood to chase movie stardom, with Del promising to help them.
When Perry’s show is canceled, the In Crowd gives one last wild dance before fading from the spotlight. Seizing one final chance to salvage the situation, Del borrows a Cadillac from Gail’s father and plans a daring escape for Vicky to meet up with Dugan. Tiny, determined to stop the escape, gives chase, and in the ensuing moment Del crashes into Tiny’s police car, ultimately helping Vicky flee on Dugan’s motorcycle.
The fallout leaves Del grounded in his room, but change is in the air. Gail arrives with a new, rebellious energy—rock music—that shifts the room’s mood. She wears a leather headband, a mini-skirt, and high-top suede boots, signaling a broader shift in the city’s culture. Gail presents a new soundtrack for Del’s world, and with the Bob Dylan LP she holds—Highway 61 Revisited—she unseals a turning point, as the opening track on side 1, “Like A Rolling Stone,” begins to spin and set a transformed mood for everyone who has watched the story unfold.
