The Heartbreak Kid

Eddie Cantrow, a San Francisco sporting-goods shop owner, attends the wedding of his former fiancée while remaining unmarried. He sits at the 'singles table' filled with children, a stinging reminder of his bachelor status. The moment foreshadows the impulsive choices his love life will drive him toward.

During a street purse snatching, Eddie tries to recover the bag but is attacked by the thief. The encounter ends with him exchanging pleasantries with Lila, the purse's owner. This chance meeting plants the seed for their future connection.

Lila appears at Eddie's store, admitting she didn't come to shop but to see him again. They begin to reconnect and soon start dating.

They start dating, and Lila reveals she may have to move to Rotterdam for her environmental research work. The prospect raises questions about their future together, especially given the distance.

Eddie's father and best friend urge him to marry quickly after learning of Lila's plan to move abroad. Lila explains that the company won't deploy married employees overseas, pressuring Eddie to commit to marriage.

Despite his doubts, Eddie agrees to marry Lila after dating for less than two months. The marriage is hurried and largely influenced by others rather than by profound love.

On the beach, Lila's sunburn keeps her in their hotel room while Eddie meets Miranda, a vacationer from Mississippi. He ends up spending most of the honeymoon with Miranda and her family, though Miranda's cousin Martin distrusts him. The budding attraction strains his marriage.

Eddie contemplates proposing divorce at lunch, but Martin and his brother Buzz confront him. In the altercation, Martin shoves a spicy pepper up Eddie's nose, escalating the tension.

Miranda accidentally falls into the ocean and Eddie attempts to save her, only to be stung by a jellyfish. Lila treats the stings by urinating on him in front of bystanders, shocking everyone present.

Lila and Miranda both abandon Eddie, and Lila even destroys Eddie's passport, stranding him in Mexico. The betrayal leaves Eddie isolated and disoriented.

Depressed, Eddie turns to drinking, and, at the urging of Uncle Tito, travels to Mississippi to make amends with Miranda. He presses on despite the emotional turmoil and uncertain reception.

Border patrol catches him trying to cross back into the U.S., and he eventually reaches Oxford, Mississippi. There he learns Miranda has married someone else, and an awkward confrontation with her husband and Martin ensues until Doc intervenes.

Eighteen months later, Eddie is divorced from Lila and living on a Mexican beach selling sporting goods. Miranda finds him and is still in love, but Eddie has remarried someone named Consuela, setting up a repeat of past heartbreak.
