Lila’s past adds another layer to his misgivings: a disclosure of substance use and a deviated septum that occasionally causes awkward nose-related mishaps in social settings. She also shares that her involvement in environmental work has been more volunteer-based than financially stable, and that the “thief” Eddie heard about is tied to an ex who owed money. Eddie starts to realize he may have mistaken the person he chose to marry, recognizing that he isn’t in love with her and is increasingly unsettled by her habits and the reality of their relationship.

The border crossing becomes a comic chase as border patrols repeatedly intercept his attempts to reenter the United States, yet he finally makes it to Oxford, Mississippi.

There, Eddie discovers Miranda has married someone else. He decides to honor her happiness and leaves, but not before a tense, emotionally charged moment where Miranda’s husband is confronted, and Doc intervenes. Eddie agrees to back off if Miranda truly loves her new husband, and she confirms that she does. He departs with Doc, unaware that Miranda still harbors feelings for him.

Eighteen months pass, and Eddie’s life has taken another turn: he’s divorced from Lila, who has taken control of his store, and he now lives a nomadic beach life in Mexico, selling sporting goods to travelers with little stability. Then Miranda appears again, having left her husband and still carrying a flame for Eddie. The reunion is warm, hopeful, and full of possibility—yet the final twist reveals a lingering complication: Eddie has remarried someone named Consuela, which sets him on a fresh, at times hopeful, at times ironic, loop of misadventure. In the end, the story stays true to its core: a man learns hard lessons about love, timing, and the quirks that define human connection, all filtered through a comic lens that leaves him wiser, if not entirely cured of his romantic optimism.
