Alexia Wheaton [Katherine Heigl] is an eighteen-year-old high school senior who seems to have it all: she’s popular, stylish, and dating a jock boyfriend, Kyle Harding [Donnie Jeffcoat]. Schoolwork isn’t a priority for her, and she navigates her days with a confident swagger that keeps most classmates at a distance. On a cold winter night at the Winter Festival dance, they confront the truth: they cannot simply return to their old lives until they admit what they’ve learned. In a heartfelt confession, Alexia reveals she too had wished to become Hayley at one point, and she explains the moment she first understood the daily bullying her sister faced. She admits to regretting her past treatment of Caitlin Sheinbaum and others who were previously on the outside. This honesty cements a new understanding between the sisters.

Realizing the best way forward is to be themselves again, they join hands and wish together on a shooting star. They awaken back in their own bodies, with a renewed sense of support for one another. Hayley worries about keeping her neat, orderly habits, but Alexia reassures her that they’ll help each other adjust. The night ends with Alexia forgiving and apologizing to Kyle, and their kiss rekindling a sincere connection as she is crowned queen at the dance. Their friends, too, re-evaluate their own behavior and decide to shed the rigid rules that had kept them apart, choosing friendship and acceptance instead. In the final moments, Alexia shares a dance with Kyle, while Hayley—now more confident—finds a neighbor named Simon [Matt Barker], beginning a hopeful new chapter.
