The Gene Krupa Story

Gene records and performs with top bands, including Benny Goodman, gaining rapid fame after a performance of Cherokee. His increasing success fuels a wild lifestyle of parties and excess. The tempo of his life shifts as the pressures of stardom mount.

The success comes with a brutal downfall: wild parties, alcohol, and infidelity strain his relationship with Ethel and friends. He becomes addicted to marijuana, and his timing falters on stage. The relationship with Ethel dissolves as she leaves him.

A stash of marijuana cigarettes is found in his coat, leading to a 90-day jail sentence and a storm of public scrutiny. Upon release, he struggles to find work because of the addiction stigma, and Ethel helps him reconnect with Tommy Dorsey for a comeback.
