What Happens in The Elixir: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Elixir (2025) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Kenes, her husband Rudi, and their son Raihan travel to the village of Wanirejo to meet Sadimin, Kenes’s estranged father, and her brother Bambang to talk about selling Wani Waras, the family’s jamu business. The visit is tense from the start, as Kenes harbors resentment toward Sadimin for marrying her best friend, Karina. During the discussion, Sadimin drinks a prototype jamu and dramatically becomes visibly younger, stunning his family. He then announces a drastic shift: he will no longer sell Wani Waras and instead plans to expand by marketing a new jamu he dubs Abadi Nan Jaya. The mood deteriorates into a heated argument, but the situation is interrupted when Sadimin suffers a seizure and collapses.

What follows is chaos as Sadimin reanimates and launches an attack on the household staff, first striking Aris and Pardi, then turning on Bambang, who kills him with a crossbow bolt. The family tries to regroup, with Rudi sending Aris to fetch help from Wanirejo. The moment Aris drives away, he reanimates behind the wheel, crashes into a local celebration at the village chief’s house, and emerges to attack the attendees, triggering a broader outbreak.

Back at Sadimin’s residence, the staff are infected as well. Kenes and Bambang attempt to escape in Kenes’s car, while Rudi, Raihan, Karina, and a maid named Mbok Sum become separated from them. The rest flee toward safety, only to find the village chief’s house overrun by the undead. Rudi manages to contact Kenes and Bambang and reveals their location, but a misstep—Kenes honking her car to signal—draws more attention from the zombies and forces a retreat toward a police station.

Inside a nearby house, the remaining survivors barricade themselves. They are discovered by a reanimated Mbok Sum, whom Rudi kills with a meat cleaver only to discover he has been bitten in the process. Before he can be treated, Rudi bids farewell to Raihan and Karina and then reanimates, ultimately being impaled in the stomach by a metal pump lever and locked away by the house’s owner, Ningsih.

Kenes and Bambang reach the police station and alert the officers, but the station is quickly overwhelmed as the infection spreads among the guards and even the commanding officer. The commander barricades the premises, but is also bitten and reanimates. In the chaos, Rahman and Ningsih’s group realize that the zombies are drawn to sound—an insight sharpened when a mosque is attacked after an adhan call. As night falls, Kenes, Rahman, and Bambang attempt to divert the undead with firecrackers looted from the station, but the horde remains formidable until a heavy rainstorm slows them.

During the chaos, Kenes sneaks into a truck to put distance between herself and the zombies. Rahman and Bambang fall behind and retreat to the station. Taking advantage of the rain, Ningsih and her group maneuver to the station using a motorcycle, hoping to reach safety with the others. They find Kenes in the truck and join in the escape plan. The group reaches the station where Karina, driving the truck, accidentally crashes into the station, pinning Bambang and letting zombies flood in.

In this dire moment, Ningsih is bitten by the station’s reanimated commander while trying to help, and Rahman shoots the now-reanimated Rudi. The remaining trio—Raihan, Karina, and Kenes—try to pull Bambang from the wreckage, but the situation looks hopeless. Bambang urges them to leave and detonates a supply of firecrackers to ignite leaking gasoline, causing a massive explosion that destroys the station and wipes out most of the surrounding zombies. It is revealed that Kenes had also been bitten; she uses flares to lure the undead away and then shoots herself in the head, sacrificing herself so that Karina and Raihan can escape on a motorcycle as the horde pursues.

In a mid-credits moment, the film’s global danger continues: Sadimin’s business partners in Jakarta, Santoso and Grace, fail to contact him and then witness Grace ingest a vial of Abadi Nan Jaya, which begins to make her younger, a hint that the new jamu’s effects extend beyond Wanirejo. Grace presents the transformation to Santoso, signaling that the threat may be far from over.

Q1

Why does Sadimin decide not to sell Wani Waras?

After drinking the prototype jamu and visibly regressing in age, Sadimin becomes convinced the formula has extraordinary potential. He announces he will keep Wani Waras and instead market the new jamu as Abadi Nan Jaya, believing it could be a breakthrough product worth far more than selling the existing business.

Foreshadowing: Sadimin's sudden reversal stems from his dramatic physical transformation, which convinces him the jamu has untapped commercial value.

How does the outbreak spread beyond Sadimin's house?

When Aris reanimates while driving to fetch help, he loses control and crashes into a celebration at the village chief's house. The reanimated Aris then attacks the attendees, directly triggering the wider outbreak throughout Wanirejo village.

When Karina accidentally crashes the truck into the station and pins Bambang beneath the wreckage, zombies flood inside. With no chance of escape and the undead closing in, Bambang urges the others to leave and detonates a supply of firecrackers to ignite leaking gasoline, creating a massive explosion that destroys most of the horde.

Foreshadowing: Bambang's final stand comes from his refusal to let the others die trying to save him.

Q8

Why does Kenes shoot herself at the end?

Kenes discovers she has been bitten during the chaos at the station. Rather than turn into a zombie and threaten Raihan and Karina, she uses flares to lure the undead away from them, then shoots herself in the head to ensure she cannot harm her son and stepdaughter as they escape on a motorcycle.

Foreshadowing: Kenes's sacrifice mirrors Rudi's earlier choice to separate himself from his family rather than risk hurting them.

Q9

What happens to Grace in the mid-credits scene?

In the mid-credits scene, Sadimin's Jakarta business partners Santoso and Grace cannot reach him. Grace then ingests a vial of Abadi Nan Jaya and begins visibly regressing in age, just like Sadimin did. This suggests the jamu's effects, and potentially the outbreak, may have spread beyond Wanirejo.

The split happens rapidly during the initial panic, forcing both groups to survive independently until they can reconnect.

Ending explained

What Happens at the End of The Elixir?

How The Elixir (2025) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.

Read the full ending explained

The story ends in a frantic scramble for survival after Sadimin’s experimental “youth elixir” turns him into a raven‑blooded zombie. His sudden transformation spreads to the house staff, the driver, and anyone he bites, sparking a village‑wide outbreak. Kenes, her estranged husband Rudi, their son Raihan, Karina, and a handful of helpers race from house to village chief’s homestead, only to find the chief’s gathering already overrun.

Rudi manages to lock himself and Karina inside the chief’s house, but a bite forces him to sacrifice himself, warning Raihan that he loves them before he is crushed by a pole. Bambang (Kenes’ brother) and Officer Rahman make a desperate stand at a nearby police station, using fireworks and the rain‑induced pause of the zombies to buy time. When the rain stops, the undead surge again; the van they commandeer stalls, and the group crashes into the station. During the chaotic melee, Ningsih is bitten; she and Rahman choose to spend their final moments together, sealing their love with a proposal before they are devoured.

Realizing she is infected, Kenes refuses to become a threat to her son. She lures the horde with a firework, then, with a gun pressed to her temple, ends her own life rather than turn. Karina, Raihan and the surviving helpers escape on a motorbike, leaving the burning police station—and the nightmare—behind.

The post‑credits scene hints that the “elixir” has already been shipped to Jakarta’s elite, where another victim undergoes the same horrific transformation. The implication is that the Indonesian outbreak will soon spill over into the capital and, possibly, the world, leaving the fate of Karina, Raihan, and any remaining survivors ominously uncertain.
