In 1882 San Francisco, a popular dance hall girl, Amanda Quaid / Duchess Swansbury, learns that Mormon millionaire Josiah Widdicombe is seeking a well-bred governess for his children. To fund the interview, she needs $65. She accepts an invitation from Charlie "Dirtwater Fox" Malloy to meet him in his hotel room, where she discovers he is carrying a satchel full of stolen money he acquired by double-crossing the Bloodworth gang in a bank robbery.

She drugs Charlie and steals the satchel, then buys a suitable outfit and interviews with Widdicombe as the Duchess of Swansbury. When Charlie notices the money is gone, he rides east on his horse Blackjack and catches up to the stagecoach carrying Amanda to Salt Lake City, Utah. Charlie recognizes Amanda and forces her to agree to give him a portion of her salary in exchange for keeping her real identity a secret.

On their journey they encounter snakes, rapids, horseback pursuits through towns, and even a Jewish wedding, all while the Bloodworth gang closes in, capturing them and reclaiming the money. The two are tied down with stakes and left to die, but manage to escape when Amanda uses a pair of lorgnette spectacles to burn through the ropes.

The pair nearly reach Salt Lake City, but Charlie is determined to recover the money and hatches a plan to outsmart the Bloodworth gang. He sets booby traps at the gang’s ranch and starts a fire in the barn, allowing them to retrieve the loot in the ensuing chaos. In the final chase and gunfight, the gang members are killed, but Charlie is wounded. Convinced he is dying, he is surprised when Amanda, brushing off his accusation of laziness, grabs the satchel and continues toward Salt Lake City, with Charlie and Blackjack following closely behind.
