The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox

Amanda needs $65 to buy proper clothes for a governess interview with wealthy Mormon Josiah Widdicombe. When she discovers Charlie has a satchel full of stolen money from double-crossing the Bloodworth gang, she sees an opportunity to fund her escape from dance hall life. She drugs him, takes the money, and uses it to buy an aristocratic outfit that helps her pose as the Duchess of Swansbury.

After being captured and tied to stakes by the gang, Amanda uses a pair of lorgnette spectacles to focus sunlight and burn through the ropes binding her. This clever escape allows both her and Charlie to free themselves and continue their journey toward Salt Lake City.

Charlie hatches a plan to retrieve the money the Bloodworth gang had reclaimed after capturing them. He sets booby traps around the ranch and starts a fire in the barn to create chaos, distracting the gang members so he and Amanda can slip in and recover the stolen loot during the confusion.

Charlie is wounded during the gunfight with the Bloodworth gang and briefly believes he is dying. However, he quickly recovers and stands up to follow Amanda and Blackjack down the road toward Salt Lake City. He survives and rides alongside Amanda as they continue together.

When Charlie claims he's dying and accuses Amanda of being lazy for not having retrieved the money, she defiantly grabs the satchel and pushes forward toward Salt Lake City. This demonstrates her determined, unyielding character, she refuses to give up the money or the opportunity for a better life she's been chasing throughout the film.

Their romance develops unexpectedly through their series of comedic misadventures. Starting as adversaries, Amanda steals from Charlie, he blackmails her, they gradually form a partnership while fleeing the Bloodworth gang. The shared dangers, escapes, and eventual victory create bonds between them, leading to the happy ending where they ride together toward Salt Lake City.

Charlie pursues Amanda because she took the $65,000 in stolen money he obtained from double-crossing the Bloodworth gang. After discovering the money is gone, he rides his horse Blackjack east to catch up with her stagecoach, eventually forcing her to agree to share her future salary in exchange for keeping her true identity secret.

Amanda pretends to be the Duchess of Swansbury to secure the governess position with wealthy Josiah Widdicombe. The job represents her chance at an easier, more respectable life. She uses the stolen money to buy an appropriate aristocratic outfit, allowing her to convincingly pose as a well-bred governess.

The money remains with Amanda throughout the film. Even when the Bloodworth gang recaptures it, Charlie and Amanda reclaim it through their booby trap and fire scheme. At the end, Amanda holds onto the satchel as she and Charlie ride toward Salt Lake City together, their relationship and the money's fate unresolved but heading toward a new chapter.
