In the maximum-security mental hospital, Feinstone recounts the murders as if another man committed them, trying to sway the psychiatrist with a remorseful, credible story. He disguises his true nature by presenting himself as a troubled surgeon who was driven mad. He also hides a sharpened tool stitched into his leg, plotting an escape.

Alan travels to Paradise, Missouri, feigning despair over city life. He adopts the alias Dr. Lawrence Caine and opens a bank account to stash skimmed funds. His arrival signals the return of his predatory reign under a new mask.

Bank officer Mr. Wilkes introduces his niece Jamie to the new 'Larry' as a potential renter for her cottage. Jamie’s resemblance to Brooke becomes a recurring motif that complicates Alan’s deception. The setup foreshadows the personal entanglements to come.

Beverley, a bank teller, grows suspicious of 'Larry' and uncovers his true identity. She arranges an appointment to reveal what she knows, but he senses her knowledge and reacts violently. Her confrontation becomes a flashpoint for the nightmare to come.
