At the end of the Spanish–American War in 1898, grumpy and overprotective Irish widower Dennis O’Grady struggles to hold his family together. He has three daughters, each navigating love, ambition, and family duty in a world that feels newly uncertain. The oldest, Katie O’Grady, welcomes home her husband James Moore, whom she has secretly married, returning from the army. The youngest two, Patricia O’Grady and Maureen O’Grady, pass a vaudeville theater owned by the lively impresario Tony Pastor. Patricia O’Grady recognizes the man from an earlier encounter when he had mocked her father, and she gently scolds him for his behavior.

Dennis is counseled by his friend Miklos Teretzky to warn his daughters about the pitfalls of men before it is too late. He remains unaware of Katie’s secret marriage and pregnancy, as well as Patricia’s flirtations with a vaudeville actor. Since the death of his wife Rosie, a famous vaudeville performer, Dennis has grown wary of that world, convinced that the hard life of vaudevillians contributed to Rosie’s death. When Patricia is caught disguised beside Tony, she pretends that he is merely a college student, and Dennis, though initially cautious, is impressed by Tony and begins to think he could be a good match for Katie.

Patricia is upset by her father’s judgment but keeps quiet, afraid to push further. She confides in Tony that she would like to join him on the stage, though Tony urges her to tell her father the truth. Dennis grows outraged when he discovers Tony’s connections to vaudeville and locks Patricia in her room; she, however, slips away to join Tony on the stage, where she quickly becomes a hit with audiences. The drama intensifies as Dennis learns that one of his daughters is expecting twins and suspects that Patricia must be the mother-to-be.

Devastated, Dennis sinks into drinking and later finds trouble with the police, ultimately disowning all his daughters, including the innocent Maureen. Left lonely by their absence, he grows physically ill as time passes. Patricia is informed by Miklos about her father’s health and gathers her sisters and their partners to care for him, hoping to mend the rift. Dennis initially resists their company, but his mood shifts when he learns that Katie has just given birth to triplets and the family’s bond begins to re-form.

In the end, the family story unfolds through reconciliation, resilience, and the start of new chapters for Patricia and Tony as they move toward engagement, alongside the evolving lives of Katie, Maureen, and the others. The film blends humor, heartbreak, and a sense of big-city vaudeville life, painting a textured portrait of love, duty, and the costs of protection chosen by a devoted father.
