It begins with Ramkishan Chaturvedi, a wealthy businessman who experiences profound loss early on when his first wife, Lakshmi, passes away, leaving behind their one-year-old son, Vivek, played by Saif Ali Khan. Despite this tragedy, Ramkishan remarries a compassionate woman named Mamta, played by Reema Lagoo, who quickly wins the affection and respect of Vivek, as he begins to accept her as his true mother. Fast forward nineteen years, and the siblings are grown, each pursuing their own paths. Prem, played by Salman Khan, has returned from the United States ready to take on the family business after completing his studies. Meanwhile, Sangeeta, depicted as a happy wife married to her husband Anand Pandey, with their adorable daughter Radhika, enjoys her family life. Vinod is preparing to undertake his training to join the family enterprise, while Vivek, still undergoing treatment for his earlier injury, manages their business operations, dedicating himself fully to his family and their shared success.

At a family celebration honoring Ramkishan and Mamta, the siblings show their love and respect. It is during this event that Sadhna, played by Tabu, the daughter of Ramkishan’s trusted associate Adarsh, is instantly drawn to Vivek, captivated by his love and dedication. Recognizing this connection, Adarsh sends a marriage proposal, which Ramkishan and Mamta consider thoughtfully. Vivek, seeing Sadhna’s genuine affection, agrees to marry her, and their union is celebrated. Concurrently, secret love stories flourish: Prem and Preeti, his childhood sweetheart and Pritam’s (Ramkishan’s friend) daughter, get engaged after years of clandestine affection. Similarly, Vinod secretly harbors feelings for Sapna, the daughter of a former neighbor, Dharamraj Bajpai.

As these romantic relationships flourish, surprises unfold. During a family outing and later at Vivek and Sadhna’s honeymoon in Rampur, Prem and Preeti declare their love and mutually decide to get engaged. The family’s harmony is tested when Ramkishan appoints Vivek as the managing director of their business, a decision that sparks jealousy and insecurity among some members, particularly Mamta. Her fears grow, fueled by her friends and Dharamraj, who subtly instigate doubts about Vivek’s position, suggesting Vivek might oust Prem and Vinod from the family hierarchy. Mamta’s paranoia intensifies her concerns about the division of their prosperous legacy, leading her to question Ramkishan’s decision and advocate for an equal share for all children.

The situation becomes more strained when Anand’s brother, Anurag, tricks him out of inheritance and business shares, which forces Anand and Sangeeta to plan a move to Bangalore to pursue opportunities in the burgeoning computer industry. This decision sows seeds of insecurity in Mamta’s mind, causing her to believe that Vivek’s control over the family business could threaten the unity of the family. Her fears are amplified by her friends and Dharamraj, who continue to manipulate her thoughts, making her question whether Vivek should remain in charge.

Despite these tensions, Vivek remains committed to the family, refusing to step aside. He convinces Prem to accept his role as managing director, emphasizing the importance of family unity. Prem, however, is reluctant to step into that role, preferring not to replace Vivek or take on the burden of leadership, especially since he does not wish to marry and replace Vivek and Sadhna. Ultimately, Anurag recognizes his mistakes and reuniting with Anand and Sangeeta, helps bring harmony back to the family.

In a heartfelt turn, Mamta realizes her mistakes and, along with Ramkishan, visits Rampur. There, Sadhna delivers a healthy baby boy, symbolizing new hope for the family. The reconciliation journey completes as Vivek and Mamta mend their relationship, reaffirming their bond. The romantic stories find their happy endings: Prem marries Preeti, and Vinod marries Sapna. Dharamraj, the once-skeptical neighbor, sees the strength of familial love and realizes that genuine affection cannot be extinguished by disagreements or misunderstandings.
