The Curse of La Llorona

The ending of The Curse of La Llorona sees the family temporarily triumph over the vengeful spirit, but not without sacrifice. Anna Tate-Garcia, with the help of Rafael Olvera, manages to confront La Llorona and drive her away by burning her with holy tears and sealing her behind a line of fire tree seeds—an ancient ward that prevents her from entering the house. However, this victory is short-lived. Their youngest daughter, Samantha, inadvertently breaks the protective line trying to retrieve her doll, allowing La Llorona to re-enter and capture her. La Llorona then attempts to drown Samantha in the backyard pool, but Olvera transforms the water into holy water, forcing the spirit to retreat.

Even after this close call, the family tries to hide the children in the attic to stay safe, but Patricia, the vengeful mother, shows up, shooting Olvera and trapping Anna in the basement. Desperate, Samantha and Chris escape upstairs, trying to avoid La Llorona. They manage a brief illusion of safety by showing her her necklace, which makes her temporarily revert to her non-cursed form, but she quickly reverts once a mirror is uncovered. Ultimately, Anna confronts La Llorona directly in the attic and stabs her in the heart with a cross made from the fire tree, seemingly defeating her.

Yet, the film’s ending leaves the fate of La Llorona ambiguous. The final scene features her cry echoing once more, hinting at her return. The post-credits tease suggests she is not truly gone and could reappear, leaving open the possibility of a sequel. Director Michael Chaves’ involvement in another Conjuring film hints that La Llorona may someday return to haunt the series again. The story closes on this ominous note, emphasizing that evil, especially in legends like La Llorona, is never entirely vanquished.
