Nia Mehra, Doyel Dhawan, is a sensitive young girl who lives with her mother Maya Verma, Bipasha Basu, and Maya’s parents Ila Verma, Shernaz Patel, after Maya and Abhay Mehra’s divorce. Nia remains oblivious to the fact that her father is dead, because Maya deliberately shields her to spare her heart from harm. This protective secrecy sets a quiet, uneasy mood at home, where love fights to survive amid memories of a fractured family and a daughter who clings to her father in her own tender way.
The family’s calm unravels when a string of disturbing events begins at school. Paras, Nia’s classmate who bullies her in class, ends up dead, and soon after, Nia’s teacher, Mrs. Sinha, who had raised concerns about Nia’s behavior, is also found dead. As these tragedies pile up, Nia starts talking to her dead father more openly, a habit that unsettles Maya and raises questions about what is really happening to her daughter.
To understand the strange changes in Nia, Maya seeks professional help through counseling. The session uncovers Maya’s painful past: she was forced into an arranged marriage with Abhay Mehra, a man with a hot temper who lashed out at home and who grew increasingly suspicious of Maya, even accusing her of infidelity. Despite Abhay’s flaws and violence, he deeply loved his daughter. After years of abuse, Maya finally files for divorce and secures sole custody of Nia. Abhay cannot bear losing his hold over them, and he threatens to take Nia away. The court hearing concludes, and soon after, Abhay dies in a car accident, a tragedy that complicates Maya’s efforts to protect Nia any further.
Following the hearing, a counselor advises Maya to spend a weekend with Nia to restore their bond. During this time, Abhay’s presence returns in a terrifying form: he possesses Nia and once again turns violent, beating Maya and insisting on taking their daughter away. In response, Maya seeks help from a priest, Ila Verma’s confidant, who offers a glimmer of hope by advising that a strong bond between mother and child may keep Abhay at bay. Yet the danger grows more ominous when the counselor who tries to rationalize the haunting is found dead, and Maya’s world begins to collapse under a wave of misfortune.
The danger escalates when Abhay begins to strike at anyone Maya loves. He kills Maya’s friend Aakanskha, and Maya is framed and arrested as a suspect. She ends up confined in a mental health facility, cut off from the world and left to confront an unimaginable fear. Maya’s mother and the priest who offered counsel are targeted as well; the priest is killed and Maya’s mother dies, leaving Maya to face despair alone. In a desperate bid to save her daughter, Maya sacrifices herself in confinement, entering the realm of the-supernatural as a spirit.
From that moment on, Maya’s spirit pushes back against the threatening force. She confronts Abhay at the edge of danger, saving Nia just as Abhay closes in with a fatal move by pushing Nia toward a speeding local train. Abhay continues to assault and threaten, but Maya’s ghostly presence confronts and weakens his power, ensuring Nia’s safety for the rest of her life. The story closes with a quiet, hopeful image: Nia celebrates her eighteenth birthday, watched over by the loving, protective spirit of Maya Verma.
In a final, tender note, the film lingers on the bond between mother and daughter, a bond that transcends death and violence, offering a message about resilience, memory, and the enduring strength of love.
