The Mitchell Vineyard, in the rolling hills of Northern California, is the lifeblood of Clovis Mitchell, James Stewart a spare and dignified grandfather and guardian to Kelly and her brother, Chris. The heart of the household is Lassie, a handsome collie whose affection, obedience, sensitivity, and wisdom anchor the family through quiet days and looming trouble.
A shadow falls when Jamison, Pernell Roberts, and his associate, Finch, arrive at the winery with an offer to buy the land. Clovis refuses, and Lassie’s protective growl flickers in the background. Jamison promises to return and makes good on his threat to claim Lassie, insisting she is one of a litter he says escaped during a fire, with a tattoo in her right ear as proof. Faced with no alternative, Clovis tells his heartbroken grandchildren that the dog must go, even as a quiet, stubborn resolve forms around Lassie’s fate. Yet Lassie has a different plan; a private plane carries her to Jamison’s Colorado Springs home, where she is fitted with a green collar studded in gold and begins a perilous escape.
Chased by a helicopter and kennel men through Colorado’s rocks and hills, Lassie manages to outpace her pursuers and even out-stare a cougar before she discovers allies in Gus, Mickey Rooney, a down-at-heel wrestling manager, and Apollo, Mike Mazurki, a kindly mountain of a man who becomes her new companions on the road.
Meanwhile, on the family side, Chris Mitchell, Michael Sharrett, bolts into action on the day he returns to school and sets off in search of Lassie. His distraught grandfather joins the search, as do Kelly Mitchell, Stephanie Zimbalist, and Allan Fogerty, Lane Davies, the attorney who becomes entwined in the family’s efforts and the case’s complications. The pursuit sweeps toward Colorado, with Chris hitching rides, then slipping into a freight truck, and a sympathetic restaurant waitress—Alice, Alice Faye—who informs the family of his movements after hearing reports of his disappearance.
As Lassie travels with her new friends, the search expands and tightens. A police officer aiding the case, Officer Wilson, James Reynolds, becomes part of the growing effort to reunite the family. The journey is long and arduous, testing every boundary of endurance and trust. Lassie, ever resourceful, finds safety where she can, even stumbling into the rehearsals of the Mike Curb Congregation, and joins their engagement briefly before a flare topples and a fire erupts. In the flames, Lassie risks her life to save a kitten from a burning dressing room and is suddenly presumed dead, a blow that darkens the Thanksgiving season for the Mitchells.
Thanksgiving Day arrives with the family gathered, each face carrying the weight of loss and longing. Then a bark breaks through the quiet—Chris looks out the window and sees Lassie, tired and filthy, wagging over the hill. The reunion is a tangible miracle: Chris rushes to meet Lassie, who leaps into his arms and covers his face with grateful, affectionate kisses. At last, Lassie is home, and the family’s bond is strengthened by the trials they endured and the miracle of a faithful dog’s return.
