The Cat Piano unfolds through the eyes of its narrator, a sentient cat and city poet, voiced by Nick Cave. The narration is clearly a poem typed on a vintage typewriter, with each line carrying a measured, lyrical cadence that invites viewers into a city that treats music as a shared heartbeat.

From the outset, the film paints a picture of a metropolis where musical talent is celebrated as a communal treasure. The narrator fixates on a single female singer who captivates him, and he quotes her singing in a way that feels almost sacred: > A voice that made all the angels of eternity sound … tone deaf

Not long after, a looming structure rises beyond the sea—a silhouette that resembles a lighthouse. Its light flickers out quickly, foreshadowing a growing malevolence and signaling that something terrible is lurking just beyond the horizon.

As the city cherishes its art, singers and musicians begin to vanish into thin air, disappearing like sailors lost at sea. Police investigators find clues that point to something otherworldly: human shoeprints left on the grounds where performances used to happen, hinting at a human hand behind the disappearances.

The narrator then explains the terrible purpose of the Cat Piano. This instrument, while reminiscent of a piano or harpsichord in form, does not produce sound through strings and hammers. Instead, it generates noise by striking a nail into the tails of cats caged inside the machine, turning their agony into the music that the instrument seeks to create. The description makes the horror unmistakable and chilling.

Upon learning this, the narrator races to warn the singer, but he arrives seconds too late. The revelation shatters the city’s sense of safety: the beloved art world fractures, and music itself becomes forbidden. For a time, the poet is haunted by the memory of the Cat Piano, his thoughts crowded with the screams the instrument causes, a tremor that refuses to fade.

A nightmare briefly intrudes: a dark humanoid figure lifts a cage containing the singer and pricks her with a needle. The poet awakens in a cold sweat and resolves to act. He climbs to a hill where the lighthouse now casts a red beam across the water, and distant screams of the cats cut through the night.

Behind him, a makeshift army of the city’s citizens gathers. They move by boat toward the lighthouse, then scale its walls and breach the inner chambers. Inside, they encounter the mad pianist at the heart of the machine. The instrument itself resembles more of an organ than a piano—a grotesque torture device outfitted with hundreds of needles.

The poet meets eyes with the singer, who sits atop the organ as the nightmare unfolds. The pianist turns, and the assembled cats attack with ferocity, biting, scratching, and clawing until he is driven to the edge and plummets to his death.

With the tyrant brought down, the imprisoned cats are freed, the lighthouse is set ablaze, and the group returns home with the rescued animals. The mood lifts as the city’s artistic lifeblood flows once more, though the narrator notes a change in his own reputation: fame fades into anonymity, and he finds contentment in simply listening to the music that now fills the streets.

As the story closes, the singer reappears in the narrator’s room, approaches, and affectionately strokes his chin, signaling a hopeful, almost intimate ending for the poet. The city’s streets hum with a renewed sense of art, and the future feels a little brighter as music returns to its rightful place in daily life.
