Sam Dalmas, an American writer grappling with a stubborn block, spends a short vacation in Rome with his English model girlfriend, Julia. They’re hoping to wrap up their stay and return to the United States in just two days, but a haze of tension hangs over their plans as Sam tries to shake off his writer’s fatigue.

One evening, while returning home from a stroll, Sam witnesses a brutal assault in an art gallery. A man in a black raincoat and gloves strikes a woman, and, as the attacker slips away, Sam becomes trapped by the gallery’s sliding glass doors. The woman, Monica Ranieri—the gallery owner’s wife—survives this encounter, but the aftermath is costly: the police confiscate Sam’s passport to keep him from leaving the country, and the case instantly marks him as a key witness in a city that already fears a serial killer prowling its streets.

Besieged by the unanswered questions of that night, Sam refuses to let the mystery fade. He lends his help to the local Inspector Morosini, determined to locate any clue that might connect the attack to a broader pattern of murders. His investigation leads him to an antique shop—the same shop where one of the victims once traded a haunting object. There, Sam uncovers a crucial tie: the last item sold on the day of the death is a chilling painting of a man in a raincoat stabbing a young woman in a snowbound landscape. The eerie image seems to mirror the crime he just witnessed, and Sam realizes a deeper narrative is at play.

When the killer phones Sam from his apartment and menacingly warns Julia will be harmed if Sam continues digging, the threat is made and recorded. The pressure intensifies as Sam travels to a nearby town under the pretense of purchasing a painting, trying to learn more about the artist behind the disturbing image. The artist reveals that the painting was inspired by a real attack from a decade earlier, adding a historical layer to the present danger.

The killer’s menace intensifies as an attempted attack on Julia occurs while she is alone at Sam’s residence, but Sam returns just in time to thwart the assault and force the intruder to retreat. The case grows colder and more tangled until a distinctive clue emerges: a faint cricket-like chirp heard on the phone recording, later identified by Sam’s ornithologist friend as the call of a rare bird from the South Caucasus, known as the bird with the crystal plumage. The only specimen in Italy is kept in a Rome zoo, and this detail suddenly brings the investigation home.

Sam, Carlo the ornithologist, Julia, and the police converge on the zoo. From the Ranieri apartment, they realize the bird’s cage overlooks Monica’s home—a fact that makes the next leap of the investigation feel almost inevitable. A scream from Monica’s apartment confirms that something terrible is unfolding, and the group rushes to intervene. In the ensuing confrontation, Alberto Ranieri—Monica’s husband and the gallery owner—suffers a fatal fall from a window as he tries to intervene, and in his dying confession he admits to the murders.

The case takes a sharper turn when Julia disappears. Sam pursues her trail to a dark, tense apartment where he discovers Carlo dead and Julia bound and gagged. The chilling sight is compounded when Monica, wearing a black raincoat, appears at the doorway, laughing melodramatically and revealing herself as the killer behind the string of murders. Sam gives chase to the art gallery, where Monica uses a heavy, spiked sculpture to pin him to the floor and taunt him with a knife. In a dramatic turn, the police burst in and seize Monica just as she faces a cornered fate.

The surviving cast finally learns the emotional truth behind the violence. A television interview with a psychiatrist reveals that Monica was the victim of a traumatic assault ten years earlier, an event that left her with a fragile psyche. The painting had triggered delusions that caused her to identify with the attacker rather than the victim, driving her to reenact the killings. Alberto’s own role in covering up the crimes is exposed as part of a shared psychosis that propelled the pair toward a long chain of violent acts. With Monica institutionalized and the danger quelled, Sam and Julia are reunited and decide to return home to the United States, bearing with them the fragile lesson that trauma can rewrite perception in unsettling ways.
