The Anthem of the Heart

Jun Naruse is introduced as a young, energetic girl who loves fairy tales. She is captivated by a hilltop castle that feeds her imagination. Unbeknownst to her, that castle is actually a love hotel.

She witnesses her father leaving the love hotel and exposes his infidelity to the family. Her father blames her for causing the fallout that follows. In her tears she imagines a fairy egg that curses her by sealing her words.

As a result of the so-called curse, Jun is unable to speak and experiences stomachaches whenever she tries to voice words. She grows distant, carrying the burden of a silence she cannot break.

Years later in high school, their homeroom teacher Kazuki Jōshima signs Jun up for the Community Outreach Event along with three classmates: Takumi Sakagami, Natsuki Nitō, and Daiki Tasaki. The group becomes her outlet to express herself despite the silence. The plan is to turn her story into a school festival performance.

When she goes to reject the position, Jun hears Takumi singing and is captivated. She then shares her past with him via her phone and asks him to turn her words into a song. This moment reveals that singing may bypass her silence.

The class decides to stage a musical for the school festival based on Jun’s experiences, framed as a fairy tale. They agree to tell the story through songs and performances. This becomes the central project that binds the group.

Daiki has a falling out with his teammates, causing friction within the group. Jun intervenes to mediate, which triggers another stomachache, but the moment helps strengthen their bonds as they move forward with the project.

Misunderstanding grows when Natsuki believes Takumi’s concern for Jun means he has romantic interest in her. Natsuki tells Takumi she will cheer them on, despite her own feelings for him.

Daiki makes amends with his teammates, and as they spend more time preparing, Jun begins to develop feelings for Takumi while Daiki starts to feel something for Jun. The group grows closer as their performance nears.

On the night before the musical, Takumi asks Natsuki about the boy she is dating, and she reveals it is Takumi, then accuses him of loving Jun. Takumi denies being in love with Jun and regrets not expressing his feelings to Natsuki in middle school. Jun overhears their conversation.

Heartbroken, Jun runs away and encounters the fairy egg, who reveals that she has worsened the curse by trying to convey her feelings for Takumi. The realization deepens her fear and alienation from her voice.

Takumi finds Jun at the now-shut-down love hotel, and to his surprise she can talk normally. She lashes out at him, and he explains that her voice was blocked by fear, not the fairy egg. He lets her vent until she’s satisfied, and Jun confesses her feelings for him, only to learn he is still in love with Natsuki.

This revelation motivates Jun to perform in the musical despite the heartbreak. Jun and Takumi rush toward the school, arriving just in time before the final scene to enact the performance.

Jun sings to convey her feelings to her mother, who finally understands what she has been through. The fairy egg was nothing more than an imagined crutch, and Jun begins to open up her heart as she heals.

As the musical ends, Takumi and Natsuki reconcile their relationship, while Daiki confesses his feelings to Jun. The group parts on a hopeful note as Jun steps forward with her voice restored.
