The Abandoned

To support her daughter Clara, Julia Streak takes a night guard job at a grand but abandoned apartment complex. She is welcomed by Dixon Boothe, the master keeper, and is introduced to the only other guard, the paraplegic Dennis Cooper. The job puts her on edge as she starts patrolling the dark, creaking hallways.

During patrols, Julia hears whispers from Room 441, a door that is supposedly unfinished. Cooper denies that anything strange hides behind it and insists the owners left the room incomplete.

A homeless man named Jim seeks shelter inside the complex. Cooper refuses him entry, but Julia relents and lets him stay, on the condition that he does not wander. She uses a hammer from Jim's belongings to break the lock and discovers that Room 441 leads to a hidden dormitory.

Jim follows Julia into the dormitory behind the door. There, Julia encounters deformed children and calls for Cooper, but the two end up losing track of Jim. Jim is then killed by a blonde girl who smashes his head with a faucet.

She searches the internet and finds a video about Wellville, a center for deformed and mentally challenged children accused of abusing its patients. Julia connects the center with the dormitory, raising the possibility that the complex hides a dark past.

Cooper discovers Julia's dependence on anti psychotics and handcuffs her, then goes down to Room 441 alone. His wheelchair is pulled into the dormitory and he is haunted by the deformed children.

Following Cooper, Julia meets an apple-cheeked boy who provides more details about Wellville: four children attempted to escape, but were caught and forced into a room containing a reservoir of contaminated water.

The crimes are revealed to have left only one survivor who struggles to escape the reservoir, and Julia believes that the survivor is Clara.

Thinking the survivor is Clara, Julia jumps into the reservoir to rescue the person, ignoring Cooper's warning. She is saved by Cooper, whose life is lost in the rescue.

After the rescue, Julia finds the door locked and is confronted by the deformed children, including the face-deformed blonde girl. She pleads for mercy, and the children allow her to leave.

It is revealed that all events are happening inside Julia's mind. She is the deformed girl, the daughter of Dennis Cooper; Dixon is the doctor and Jim is a sickly old man; Clara is the name of her doll.

The film ends with Julia flatlining on life support that she has had since childhood, while her father mourns nearby. The ending confirms the traumatic origins of her mind and the dreamlike cycle she has endured.
