Read the complete plot breakdown of Term Life (2016), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Nick Barrow is a seasoned heist planner who sells his schemes to the highest bidder. However, everything goes awry when he is compelled to take his estranged daughter Cate, who he has never really connected with, on the run after a botched job. Cate has been forced to be self-reliant due to her mother Lucy’s struggles with alcoholism. This sudden disruption only adds to their tense relationship, as Cate struggles with the turmoil that her father’s criminal lifestyle has thrust upon her.

Determined to uncover the truth behind his betrayal, Nick teams up with an elderly man named Harper to get the inside scoop. Through their investigations, Nick deduces that the traitorous double-crosser is none other than Captain Keenan, an undercover officer with lethal intentions.

As they navigate this dangerous situation, Nick and Cate slowly start to form a bond. In a heartfelt moment, Cate inquires about her father’s heist strategies. Nick shares with her, > “learn how to get out before you get in, evaluate the security of a location, whether they have CCTV or the owner is the one that responds, and always make sure to have a workable exit plan.” Though initially vexed by her father’s invasive approach to her life, demonstrated by the photographs he has collected over the years, Cate finds joy in their shared experiences—like the birthday gift of a carnival outing where he teaches her how to shoot.

Meanwhile, Captain Keenan is embroiled in his own web of nepotism and deceit, eliminating his corrupt team and framing Nick for the resulting chaos, including the murder of Detective Matty. Faced with threats from mob bosses, contract killers, and corrupt law enforcement, Nick takes out a life insurance policy, hoping to leave something meaningful for Cate.

In an intense turn of events, Nick gets apprehended by a local sheriff, but the Spanish mob intervenes with a plan to kill him—which Cate bravely disrupts. After a heated exchange, Cate, frustrated with her father’s decisions, leaves him by the roadside. However, the stakes rise when Keenan kidnaps her, using her as bait to lure Nick.

In a climactic confrontation, Nick and Cate manage to escape the chaos, as Cate devises a plan that eliminates Keenan and exposes his crimes. This victory not only exonerates Nick but also solidifies their relationship as they choose to start anew, living together and nurturing their bond as a father and daughter.
