Dale 'Mac' McKussic is introduced as a former drug dealer who is striving to change his life and leave his past behind. Despite his criminal background, he possesses the desire to turn over a new leaf and escape the world of drugs.

Detective Lieutenant Nick Frescia, a longtime friend of Mac, is assigned to keep an eye on his activities due to concerns about his slipping back into the drug trade. Their friendship, which began in high school, is tested as Nick is caught between his duty and his loyalty to Mac.

DEA Agent Hal Maguire accuses Mac of returning to drug dealing, creating a moral dilemma for Nick. This accusation puts Nick in a challenging position where he must uphold the law against a close friend he wishes to protect.
