Diana Watts, a high school English teacher in suburban Texas, begins an illicit affair with Eric Tull, one of her students. Their relationship ignites in secrecy, as they try to maintain a facade in class and in public.

During a visit with her brother Hunter, the conversation turns to their mother's deteriorating health, causing Diana to feel overwhelmed. Unable to cope with the discussion, she abruptly leaves to escape her emotions.

Diana's roommate, Sophia, suggests introducing her to two single men, Rich and Dan, at an upcoming party. Despite attending the party, Diana finds both men uninteresting and decides to leave early, yearning for something more meaningful.

After winter break, Diana learns from fellow teacher Jessica about a circulating topless photo of a student at school. It strikes fear in her as she realizes that the photo she sent to Eric could also be shared widely, compromising her position.

Worried about the potential fallout from the photo, Diana confronts Eric in the school parking lot regarding its deletion. Eric assures her he has deleted the photo, though the tension in their relationship continues to build.

Eric mentions that a girl asked him to the Sadie Hawkins dance, igniting feelings of jealousy in Diana. Despite Eric's reassurances that it means nothing, the seed of insecurity is planted in Diana's mind.

Diana and Eric escape for a weekend at his family's ranch. During an intimate moment, they are interrupted by the ranch foreman, James, forcing Diana to hide, which heightens her anxiety about their secret relationship being discovered.

After James's visit, Diana confronts her fears about losing her job if they are caught. She suggests putting their relationship on hold, illustrating the strain and consequences of their affair.

Back at school, Diana confesses to Eric that she misses him and invites him over later. Their encounter is interrupted by Jessica, creating an atmosphere of tension and secrecy surrounding their affair.

Diana and Eric's intimacy escalates at her home, but Diana's emotional instability surfaces as she oscillates between pushing him away and pleading for him to stay. Frustrated with her unpredictable behavior, Eric ultimately leaves.

Driven by desperation, Diana drives to Eric's house, attempting to reach him via phone. When Eric doesn’t answer, she resorts to contacting his family, inadvertently raising suspicions about her intentions.

Checking into a motel, Diana grapples with her emotions and attempts to reach Eric. Feeling completely isolated and rejected, she receives a voicemail from school staff regarding an issue with Eric, heightening her sense of dread and despair.

As she processes the turmoil in her life, Diana curls up on the motel bed, overcoming with sorrow. The realization of her dwindling options and the possible consequences of her affair makes her cry in solitude.
