What Happens in Taj Mahal: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Taj Mahal (1963) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

It was at the Meena Bazar that Shehzada Khurram first laid eyes on Arjumand Banu / Mumtaz Mahal. It was love at first sight for both of them. Empress Nur Jahan, wife of Jahangir, learns of the match and grows furious, wishing Khurram to wed her daughter instead of Arjumand. She hatches plans to keep Arjumand apart: first trying to imprison her within the palace, then attempting to send Khurram off to battle, but each scheme fails. Khurram earns the title Shah Jehan upon his triumphant return. In a final bid to block the union, she has her stepson Saifuddin arrange Khurram's murder, yet the conspiracy collapses once more.

Khurram returns home, wounded but alive, and keeps his injury secret from his father for fear of worrying him. When Jahangir learns of Arjumand's decisive help, he blesses their marriage, and the couple are united. Saifuddin ends up marrying Ladli Banoo, the daughter Noor Jehan had hoped to pair with Khurram. Khurram is later sent away to govern another kingdom, while Noor Jehan continues to maneuver from the throne. As Jahangir's health falters, Nur Jahan seizes power, declares Khurram an intruder, and dispatches armies to bring him in or to seize his two sons. The saga unfolds toward a timeless legend, culminating in the creation of one of the seven wonders of the world—the Taj Mahal.

Q1

Why did Noor Jehan oppose Khurram's marriage to Arjumand?

Noor Jehan, the Empress and wife of Jahangir, wanted Khurram to marry her own daughter Ladli Banoo instead of Arjumand Banu. By securing this match, she hoped to gain greater political influence and control at court. When Khurram chose Arjumand, Noor Jehan viewed the union as a threat to her power and actively worked to prevent it.

Why did Khurram keep his injury secret from his father Jahangir?

Khurram concealed his wound from Jahangir because he feared worrying his father and potentially losing favor at court during a vulnerable political period. His secret injury also risked undermining his standing as a capable heir, which was crucial given the ongoing court rivalries orchestrated by Noor Jehan.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Khurram had already survived Saifuddin's assassination attempt, making him wary of showing weakness.

The specific details of the failure aren't fully outlined in the summary, but the plot's failure allowed Khurram to return to Arjumand and eventually marry her.

Foreshadowing: Noor Jehan's earlier schemes to separate the lovers had already failed repeatedly, establishing a pattern of thwarted opposition.

This declaration marked the climax of her years-long opposition to Khurram and represented a direct grab for control of the empire.
