In a near-future Tokyo where the Japanese yen has become the world’s strongest currency, the city experiences a significant influx of immigrants—both legal and illegal—drawn by the promise of opportunity. This wave of newcomers earn the nickname Yen Town (円都, en to) among locals. However, the native Japanese community despises this nickname and retaliates by calling the immigrants Yen Thieves (円盗, en tou), a term that is also translated as “Yentowns” in the film’s English subtitles.

The story focuses on a sixteen-year-old girl, Ayumi Ito, who is mourning the recent loss of her mother. She drifts through different people’s lives until she finally finds refuge with a Chinese Yentown prostitute named Chara, known as Glico. Glico proudly names her Ageha (meaning swallowtail), and under Glico’s watchful care, Ageha begins to forge a new path.

Within Yentown, the community is made up of immigrants who speak a mix of Japanese, English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Most make a living through petty crimes or prostitution. Despite her circumstances, Ageha does not actively participate in these illicit activities. She is, however, protected by Glico and a diverse group of immigrants, including Hiroshi Mikami, who plays Fei Hong, an auto mechanic involved in scams; Shiek Mahmud-Bey as Arrow, a former American boxer; and Atsuro Watabe, who portrays Ran, a mysterious broker. While Ageha’s exact background remains ambiguous, she mentions to someone that she is originally from Japan.

The narrative explores their struggles and aspirations, especially when a rare cassette tape featuring Frank Sinatra’s My Way comes into play. This tape, which the mob is desperately after, coupled with a counterfeit money scheme, becomes a turning point for the residents of Yentown. The characters are given a fleeting chance to pursue their dreams—fame, money, or escape from their harsh realities—but their aspirations often fracture their solidarity, forcing them to confront their individual challenges.

Structurally, the film weaves a tapestry of slice-of-life moments with intense thriller sequences. It portrays Ageha and her fellow immigrants as they bond over shared hardships, launch their own music club, and experience moments of fleeting fame and financial gain, all while navigating the dangerous underworld they inhabit. Their journey is one of self-discovery—seeking a genuine identity amid chaos and deceit.

As the story builds to its climax, Glico is relentlessly pursued by the mob because of their prized cassette. In a dramatic turn, Tetsu Watanabe, playing the group boss, is involved in a tense confrontation where he is ultimately saved by Ran, who kills the mob members to protect her. Meanwhile, Fei Hong is caught with counterfeit bills and subjected to brutal interrogation; in his cell, he finds solace in singing Sinatra’s My Way before he succumbs to his injuries. His friends—Ageha, Glico, and Ran—hold a heartfelt memorial, burning all their gained wealth in a symbolic gesture of letting go. Ran conducts a gun salute, marking the end of a tumultuous chapter.

In a surprising twist of fate, Ryo Ranki, the mob boss, is seen contemplating his next move during a car ride. He unexpectedly re-encounters Ageha, the girl he once saved from overdosing on heroin. Grateful, she thanks him properly this time, and she gives him the cassette tape with My Way. Unbeknownst to her, Ryo had been searching for that very tape all along. He asks her her name, and she reveals that Glico, the woman who raised her, gave her her name. Ryo, overwhelmed, realizes that she is the girl he once knew from their childhood, creating a poignant moment of reflection and unfinished business.

Throughout the film, the characters’ hopes, struggles, and memories intertwine, painting a vivid picture of life on the fringes of society—a blend of resilience, longing, and the unyielding pursuit of a better future.
