Cody Maverick lives in obscurity on Pen Gu Island, where he runs his own surf school with Lani Aliikai. He trains kids and dreams of bigger surfing glory, often clashing with his rival Tank Evans who runs a rival school. Cody's world revolves around teaching and surfing, not fame.

Chicken Joe leaves his world tour to visit Pen Gu Island, reuniting with his best friend Cody. He is a world-famous surfer known as 'El Pollo Loco', admired by fans worldwide. The reunion sets the stage for new adventures on the island.

The Hang 5 arrive on the island: Mr. McMahon, Paige, J.C., The Undertaker, Hunter, and Seagull, bringing a aura of legendary surfing. At a party hosted by Cody, McMahon reveals their quest to ride a 50-foot rogue wave in The Trenches and his retirement plans. He begins scouting replacements among Cody's group.

Lani is identified as a potential member by Mr. McMahon, while Cody and Tank recruit J.C. and Hunter to back them as replacements. The Undertaker randomly selects Chicken Joe as a candidate, unaware of his fame. The dynamic shifts as alliances form around the impending challenge.

The group leaves Pen Gu Island aboard a whale, beginning their journey toward the unknown coast. They traverse a harsh route that includes a desert, quicksand, and a jungle as they pursue the Trenches. The trek tests their resolve before any wave awaits.

In the jungle, they discover a temple and the remains of an ancient penguin civilization that worshipped surfing. Tank discovers a golden surfboard, hinting at legendary power and heritage. The moment deepens their quest and raises the stakes.

Using improvised hang gliders strapped to surfboards, they cross a lava lake guided by temple hieroglyphs. Cody's friction with Tank leads him to almost knock Chicken Joe into the lava, and the group harshly rebukes him. Overcome with guilt, Cody leaves the group in the night.

Wandering alone, Cody discovers another set of hieroglyphs showing the champion's fate in The Trenches. Realizing the danger, he resolves to return and warn Chicken Joe and Lani. His absence weighs on the others as they push toward the Trenches.

The remaining group reaches The Trenches. Seagull is struck by lightning and disintegrates in the storm. Lani deciphers The Hang 5's RTL as 'ride the lightning' and declines membership, while Chicken Joe accepts an honorary membership and Tank agrees to RTL.

As the rogue wave forms, The Hang 5 and Tank ride atop it as lightning rages overhead. Tank, fearing for his life due to his metallic board, swims off from the wave, while The Hang 5 continue to ride between bolts. The moment marks a tense test of courage and loyalty.

The Undertaker is struck by lightning and falls into the water. Chicken Joe uses jellyfish stings as a natural AED to revive him. Hunter rescues the injured, while McMahon and Paige experience a wipeout and the group's fate hangs in the balance.

After the peril, J.C. arrives and brings Cody and Tank to safety. The display of teamwork reinforces the bond among the group. The moment solidifies Cody's leadership and loyalty to his friends.

Mr. McMahon offers Cody a place on the team, but Cody refuses in order to stay with his friends and his island community. He values his home and the people who supported him over fame and fortune. The choice reflects his commitment to loyalty over opportunity.
