DJ Williams and his younger brother Duron, both passionate krump dancers, represent the Goon Squad in a high-stakes underground competition. Their relentless efforts culminate in a spectacular performance, clinching victory and igniting their dreams of dance fame.

Celebration quickly turns to horror when the rival crew ambushes DJ and Duron, resulting in a brutal confrontation. Tragically, Duron is fatally shot, leaving DJ devastated and facing severe repercussions for his involvement.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, DJ is arrested for assault, sending him into a downward spiral. His mother decides to send him away to Atlanta to stay with Aunt Jackie and Uncle Nate, hoping for a fresh start.

Upon arriving in Atlanta, DJ enrolls at Truth University, where Uncle Nate enlists him in a work-study program. This opportunity aims to instill responsibility in DJ while keeping him occupied as he adjusts to his new environment.

As he pursues academic excellence, DJ enrolls in tutoring sessions with April, which brings them closer together. During a dinner date, she shares insights into the history of African-American fraternities, further piquing his interest.

Inspired by April's teachings and encouraged by his experiences, DJ decides to pledge Theta Nu Theta along with Rich and Noel. This decision ignites a journey filled with challenges and a commitment to his fraternity.

DJ’s innovative choreography incorporating krumping moves faces resistance from traditionalists within the fraternity. A challenge from Sylvester leads to a stepping duel that tests DJ's resolve and the acceptance of his fresh style.

The Gamma crew discovers DJ's troubled past, including the details surrounding his brother's death and DJ's wrongful conviction. This revelation results in a suspension from the university, jeopardizing his dreams.
