In the year 2285, Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) presides over a simulator session for the trainees of Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy). During this simulation, Lieutenant Saavik leads the starship USS Enterprise on a critical rescue mission intending to save the damaged ship Kobayashi Maru. As the Enterprise enters the dangerous Klingon Neutral Zone, it comes under attack from Klingon cruisers, resulting in significant damage. This no-win scenario is crafted to evaluate the mettle of Starfleet officers. In the aftermath, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) celebrates Kirk’s birthday and notices the admiral’s somber mood; thus, he passionately encourages Kirk to seek out new command opportunities rather than languishing behind a desk as time ages him.

Meanwhile, aboard the USS Reliant, a mission is underway to locate an uninhabited planet for the innovative Genesis Device testing. This device has the astonishing capability to reorganize matter to create life-sustaining environments. On a suspected candidate planet, dubbed Ceti Alpha VI, Commander Pavel Chekov (played by Walter Koenig) and Captain Clark Terrell (portrayed by Paul Winfield) beam down to explore, only to find themselves captured by the genetically engineered tyrant, Khan Noonien Singh (played by Ricardo Montalbán). Years ago, Kirk had exiled Khan and his fellow superhumans from 20th-century Earth to Ceti Alpha V following an attempted coup aboard the Enterprise. They faced dire consequences when Ceti Alpha VI exploded, forever altering the ecosystem of Ceti Alpha V, leading Khan to seek vengeance against Kirk for the demise of his wife.

With a cruel strategy, Khan implants Chekov and Terrell with alien creatures capable of mind control, effectively bending them to his will. They aid Khan in seizing control of the Reliant. As Khan learns about the Genesis Device, he promptly attacks space station Regula I, where Dr. Carol Marcus, Kirk’s former lover, and their son, David, are working on the groundbreaking project.

The Enterprise embarks on a training voyage that soon transforms into a rescue operation when a distress signal from Regula I is received. In the ensuing confrontation, the Reliant ambushes the Enterprise, inflicting casualties among the trainees. Khan audaciously contacts Kirk, offering to spare his crew in exchange for all materials linked to Genesis. Employing cunning, Kirk delays making a decision and manipulates the Reliant’s systems to lower its defenses, enabling a counterattack. As a result, Khan retreats for repairs while the damaged Enterprise makes its way toward Regula I.

Once there, Kirk, McCoy, and Saavik transport to the station, where they find Terrell and Chekov alive but claiming innocence. The duo informs Kirk that Khan has tortured the station’s crew and that Genesis is still out of reach. To their horror, they encounter the remnants of Dr. Marcus’s team. After some duplicitous exchanges, Khan instructs Terrell and Chekov to kill Kirk. Struggling against the creature’s control, Terrell takes his own life, while Chekov collapses, freed from mind control.

Khan, confident that Kirk is trapped, relocates Genesis aboard the Reliant. However, Kirk and Spock use a coded message to set up a meeting. Kirk cleverly directs the Enterprise into the perilous Mutara Nebula, where the chaotic environment evens the playing field between the two ships. Spotting Khan’s unrefined tactics in battle, Kirk seizes the opportunity to severely damage the Reliant.

In a desperate final move, Khan activates the Genesis Device, poised to transform the nebula, including the Enterprise, into new matter. Although Kirk’s crew races to escape, their damaged warp drive hinders their efforts. In a selfless act, Spock restores the warp drive, ensuring their escape but succumbing to fatal radiation exposure in the process.

As Kirk reaches the engine room moments later, he finds Spock at death’s door. In their poignant final exchange, Spock advises Kirk not to mourn his loss, believing his sacrifice was a rational choice to save his teammates. Following this emotional farewell, a ceremonial space burial is held, and Spock’s coffin is sent into orbit around the newly formed planet created by Genesis. The crew sets their course to rescue the stranded crew of the Reliant on Ceti Alpha V, while Spock’s coffin rests gently on the surface of the new Genesis planet, symbolizing both loss and hope.
