Set at the close of the nineteenth century, maidservant Madara loves farmhand Andrs but is compelled to marry an elderly, affluent household owner. Over the years her feelings grow cold, and when Andrs returns to the area, her widowed husband dies, leaving her with a son and a tangled web of past passions and present duty.
