Rocklin, Colorado, 1925, amidst a harsh winter. Young Arturo Bandini is devoted to his father Svevo, his pious mother Maria, and his brothers, even though his bricklayer father squanders their meager funds at the Imperial Poolhall and spends time with the wealthy American widow Hildegarde. Their mother tolerates his behavior, and Arturo’s little brother still wets the bed. Arturo loves baseball—though he must wait for spring—movies, and a girl named Rosa, who does not return his affection.
