Spirit Untamed (2021) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Lucky's mother, Milagro Navarro-Prescott, dies during a circus performance in the Wild West. She was an accomplished equestrian who performed daring tricks riding magnificent horses. During one of her acts, she falls from her horse and dies tragically. After Milagro's death, Lucky's father Jim Prescott was unable to raise her, likely due to his work as a horse trainer in the Wild West town of Miradero. Lucky was instead raised by her aunt Cora and grandfather James in an eastern city. Lucky has very little relationship with her father as a result, which is why traveling to Miradero for the summer becomes such a significant moment for her to reconnect with him.

Foreshadowing: Lucky's restlessness in the city and her desire for adventure hint at her longing for connection with her father and her roots.

Lucky earns Spirit's trust through patience and gentle kindness. After discovering Spirit being harshly trained by the wrangler Hendricks, Lucky visits him regularly at the corral. She offers him an apple, allowing him to smell her hand before she attempts contact. Over time, Spirit accepts her presence and lets her groom him with gentle caresses. Their bond deepens as Lucky respects his wild nature rather than trying to tame him forcefully.

Foreshadowing: When Lucky first sees Spirit running wild on the train, she feels an immediate, instinctive connection to him.

Hendricks is a wrangler who captures wild horses for profit. He and his gang hunt down mustangs like Spirit to sell them, likely for use as work horses or other commercial purposes. This is why Spirit is being subjected to harsh training at the corral in Miradero, to break his spirit and make him manageable for sale. Lucky and her friends must stop Hendricks before he profits from stealing the horses' freedom.

Foreshadowing: The harsh training methods at the corral reveal Hendricks' intentions to commercialize the wild horses.

Lucky chooses to stay in Miradero because of her deep bond with Spirit and her newfound appreciation for her life there. Throughout her adventure rescuing Spirit and his herd, Lucky has reconnected with her father Jim, formed strong friendships with Pru and Abigail, and discovered a sense of belonging she never felt in the eastern city. Her love for Spirit specifically, knowing he must remain free to roam wild, compels her to stay where she can watch over him while embracing her heritage and family.

Foreshadowing: Lucky's growing happiness in Miradero and her strengthening relationship with her father foreshadow her choice to remain.

When Spirit escapes from the corral, Lucky chases after him into the dangerous terrain near Miradero. Her desperate pursuit leads her to a cliff edge where she nearly falls into an abyss. This happens because Lucky is so determined to reach Spirit that she doesn't recognize the physical danger around her. Pru and Abigail must rescue her from falling, highlighting how Lucky's emotional connection to Spirit sometimes overrides her awareness of practical risks.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes show Lucky's impulsive nature and her overwhelming curiosity about Spirit.

The coordinated effort between the girls and Spirit results in freeing the entire herd and defeating Hendricks.

Lucky's mother Milagro was Mexican-American, which is reflected in her daughter's full name Fortuna "Lucky" Esperanza Navarro-Prescott. The connection to her heritage becomes significant as Lucky discovers more about her mother's past in the Wild West, specifically that Milagro was a celebrated circus rider who embodied the freedom and adventure Lucky is now seeking. Jim Prescott is protective of Lucky and initially discourages her interest in horses because he fears for her safety. As an experienced horseman in the Wild West, Jim understands the dangers that come with working with horses, especially wild ones. Additionally, his guilt over not being present in Lucky's life after her mother's death makes him anxious about protecting her from any potential harm. This tension resolves as he sees Lucky's genuine connection with Spirit and recognizes her determination.

Foreshadowing: Jim's protective nature is evident when he warns Lucky about the dangers of the Wild West.

The protagonists defeat Hendricks through a combination of teamwork, courage, and Spirit's help. While infiltrating the train, Lucky and her friends fight off Hendricks' gang members.
