The story unfolds with Sam Greenfield, a free-spirited 18-year-old, embarking on an exhilarating music video adventure alongside her foster sister, Hazel. Unfortunately, their joy is swiftly overshadowed by Sam’s seemingly endless string of misfortunes. As the clock ticks down on her time in the foster care system, Sam faces the grim prospect of leaving behind the comforts of her childhood home into an uncertain future.

In her new setting, a modest apartment presents its own challenges, including a confining pull-out bed that only adds to her woes. On a day that begins with promise, everything unravels when she awakes to find her windows flung wide open, allowing leaves to swirl in around her. Despite her best intentions, her morning routine spirals into a flurry of mishaps, threatening to ruin her plans entirely.

A chance meeting with her boss, Marvin, while working at the local store offers a flicker of hope. Although Sam initially struggles, she finds solace through a simple task that allows her to start anew. Just when solitude seems to reign, an unexpected visitor—a mysterious black cat—makes an entrance, providing her an unlikely companion. During an exchange, Sam shares her sandwich with the feline and uncovers a four-leaf clover-adorned penny, a token that holds nostalgic memories tied to Hazel’s whimsical belief in “lucky pennies.”

The following morning introduces a twist of fate, as Sam finds herself on a surprising streak of good fortune, gracefully overcoming life’s hurdles. However, her luck takes a nosedive when she accidentally flushes the cherished penny down the toilet. Desperate to reclaim her good fortune, she embarks on a daunting quest to recover it.

In her journey, she encounters Bob, the whimsical cat with an uncanny ability to mimic a charming Scottish accent. As Sam’s urgency spikes, so does her resolve to retrieve the penny. Following Bob leads her to a mysterious portal, beckoning her into an enchanted realm—the Land of Luck—just seconds before it shuts. Taking a leap into the unknown, Sam charts a course toward a potentially majestic future.

Now in this captivating realm, Sam learns from Bob that humans are forbidden from entering this magical domain where the delicate balance of good and bad luck is controlled by various departments. With time running out and her destiny hanging in the balance, Sam must act quickly to avoid catastrophic consequences for Bob, who risks being banished to the Department of Bad Luck if his missing penny goes unidentified. Donning disguises, with Sam morphing into a feisty leprechaun and Bob by her side, they devise a plan to deceive The Captain, a figure who harbors ill-will towards Bob.

Navigating through the sprawling Penny Depot, where leprechauns procure lucky trinkets, their scheme quickly goes awry. An accidental blunder leads to chaos when The Captain uncovers their ruse, prompting Sam and Bob to come clean to Gerry, who ultimately becomes a crucial ally in their quest for redemption.

In their endeavors, they discover bizarre bunny drones dispatched to recover lost pennies from the human world. Driven by urgency, they pursue a rare luck crystal essential for powering these peculiar machines. Their path soon crosses with Babe, a magnificent dragon radiating with good fortune, who shares her invaluable wisdom. Throughout the escapade, Sam’s grasp of luck’s intricate mechanisms deepens, as she learns about the ancient stones that maintain equilibrium between good and bad fortune.

In a spirited distraction, Sam performs an impromptu dance to the tune of “Lucky Star,” while Bob stealthily maneuvers the drone in the human world. However, upon the penny’s return, it bizarrely transforms, vanishing into the mysterious In-Between, the zone where good and bad luck collide. The moment takes a turn as Sam finds herself in the troubling realm of Bad Luck, relying on her wit to navigate complex corridors and reunite with Bob while confronting the consequences of their daring escapades.

Together, they encounter Jeff, an enigmatic unicorn who oversees the ominous machinery of the Bad Luck Apparat. It is here that Sam learns about Jeff’s past and his unfortunate fall from grace. As moments of despair unfold, Babe offers Sam another lucky penny, amplifying her struggle to secure Hazel’s future.

Despite Bob’s missteps with The Captain, Sam ingeniously deflects blame, granting Bob a narrow escape, yet their thrill-seeking spirit drives them to shut down the Bad Luck Apparat. As events unfold, it seems as though Hazel is on the doorstep of finding a loving family, but just then, the tide of bad luck rushes back in, creating chaos within the department as realities transform around them.

The climax presents Sam with a pivotal recognition—that her attempts to set things right have inadvertently unleashed a storm of misfortune upon those she seeks to protect. Amidst navigating through the intricate layers of bad luck, Sam learns from Rootie, played by John Ratzenberger, about the good luck beads bestowed upon them, aiding her quest to restore balance.

In an inspiring turn of events, after chasing down Babe to rectify the bad luck stone situation, Sam persuades her to restore equilibrium, enriching their world with positivity. As the story comes to a heartwarming conclusion, Hazel finds herself within the embrace of a nurturing family, while Bob opts to remain with Sam, rejecting an alluring offer within the Land of Luck.

A year later, Sam stands triumphant in her new career while joyfully visiting Hazel. As she reflects on her journey, she realizes that even the most trying circumstances lead to the most rewarding blessings, and she embraces the beautiful tapestry that her life has woven together through trials and triumphs alike.
