In a therapy session, Bill tells Dr. Cleveland that he does not trust his rich family. He explains that he fears there is something sinister hiding behind their social circle.

David gives Bill a surreptitiously recorded tape that sounds like Bill's family engaged in a murderous orgy. Bill is stunned by the implication that his fears may be true.

Bill delivers the tape to Dr. Cleveland for analysis. Later, when he plays it back, the audio has changed to depict his sister's debutante party instead of the alleged orgy.

Bill attempts to meet David to obtain another copy of the tape. He arrives at a crash site where David's van is surrounded by ambulances and police, and a body is loaded into an ambulance; he is kept from seeing its face.

At a party hosted by Ted Ferguson, Bill confronts the likelihood that the first tape was real. Ted confirms this, heightening Bill's confusion and anger. He leaves the party with Clarissa.

The following day, Bill confronts his parents and sister about the tape and the truth behind their world. The confrontation escalates as old resentments and suspicions surface.

At David's funeral, Bill and Milo suspect that David's corpse may be fake. The doubt casts a shadow over the ceremony and deepens the mystery surrounding the elite.

Bill is contacted by Martin, his rival for high school president. During their arranged meeting, Martin's throat is slashed and his body disappears when the police arrive; the next day, Martin strangely shows up alive at school.

Bill is drugged by the family with Dr. Cleveland's help and taken to a hospital. He wakes, pulls a curtain he believes hides David, but finds nothing; Milo and Clarissa try to warn him while he makes his way back home.

Bill returns to his house to find a formal party in full swing. Dr. Cleveland reveals that Bill's family and their friends are actually aliens from another species. David is brought in as a human sacrifice to demonstrate their power.

The guests shed their clothes and begin the shunt, deforming and melding their bodies into a near-amorphous mass. They feast on the nutrients from David's body, gruesomely absorbing and killing him as part of their ritual.

Bill, aided by Milo and Clarissa, escapes the house as the party continues. Clarissa, though a member of the other species, has fallen in love with Bill and betrays the rest to help him flee; they flee into the night while the elite's revelry goes on.
