A young woman embarks on a fateful car ride, answering a call from her lover only to tragically crash. Amidst the chaos, family album photos and an image of a unique triangular house flash before her eyes. This poignant moment unfolds in a video obituary crafted by former documentary filmmaker Erica Shaw.
As the narrative unravels, it becomes evident that Erica possesses an extraordinary gift — a form of psychic ability that allows her to perceive what others cannot. Shortly after her accident, the deceased’s sister storms into Erica’s life, demanding her assistance in uncovering the secrets surrounding their father, Campbell Bradford, who is on his deathbed. The sister temptingly offers Erica a lucrative opportunity to direct a film revealing the man’s hidden truths, leaving behind an advance and an enigmatic bottle of water that carries a demon’s image and a cryptic label: “Pluto.”
Reluctantly, Erica accepts the challenge and heads to the hospital to meet Campbell. Their communication is peculiar; they converse exclusively when she peers through the camera lens. He reminisces about his childhood in West Baden Springs, where the So Cold the River runs beneath, making it the perfect place to disappear. Intrigued, Erica shows him the mysterious bottle, igniting a chilling reply from Campbell: > “His blood… His name… The seal is broken… What have you done?”
Soon after, Erica arrives in West Baden and checks into a stunning hotel, adorned with a grand dome. She is cheerfully greeted by Dylan, the receptionist, who hints at the town’s upcoming rebirth festival, declaring, “Don’t underestimate the charm of our city - we’ll still get you.” That night, Erica is tormented by visions of a mysterious man clad in black and a young boy playing the violin as the bottle’s contents grow colder.
In the hotel lobby, she encounters Ann McKinney, who shares tales of the local healing springs and the festival, but abruptly leaves at the mention of Campbell’s name. As her visions intensify, Erica meets Josiah Bradford, who reveals his aspirations and unusual family history—he is Campbell’s great-grandson. A mix of tension and intrigue ensues, with visions leading Erica to dark revelations.
Through interviews with townsfolk, Erica learns about Campbell’s gruesome past as a notorious killer who aimed to control the city, leaving a trail of destruction. With each sip from the enchanted bottle, the haunting visions become more pronounced, revealing a deeper connection to the malevolent forces surrounding her.
The tension escalates as Erica becomes engrossed in the narrative, neglecting her initial hesitations about the assignment. She provokes Josiah into a revealing dialogue about his family’s dark legacy, ultimately drawing the line between art and truth. Their conversations grow darker as Josiah grapples with family curses, questioning his identity while also asserting a bizarre fascination with the death that seems to run through his bloodline.
Meanwhile, Kellin Cage, a young assistant and admirer of Erica, questions the authenticity of her visions and the ethical implications of leveraging reality for artistic success. The interplay of power, madness, and artistry culminates during the desperate rebirth celebration when the depths of Campbell’s legacy emerge.
Chaos ensues when Josiah uncovers a stash of dynamite in the basement, intending to use it during the festival. A confrontation leads to a dramatic showdown, with Kellin narrowly escaping potential death. However, it’s Erica who takes the brutal step to claim her artistic vision by recording the impending explosion for her next documentary masterpiece, suggesting her integrity and sanity have been irrevocably fractured.
In a haunting finale, visions of a man in a Campbell hat culminate to an explosive end, leaving an indelible mark on the town. In the final moments, the question lingers: can one truly escape their bloodline? As tragedy strikes and the water turns to ice, the legacy of darkness continues to haunt their lives.
