In 1974, the coastal village of Guncheon is choked by pollution from a nearby chemical plant, driving the haenyeo to struggle. Facing dwindling catches, the divers are drawn toward a dangerous new plan: using their boat Maengryong-ho for underwater smuggling to make money. The shift marks the start of a slippery path from subsistence fishing to organized crime.
