Smash Palace

Eight years before the film's present, former racing driver Al Shaw returns home to take over his late father's car-wrecking yard, Smash Palace, on the North Island Volcanic Plateau. The isolation of the yard shapes his life, anchoring his identity to cars rather than a racing career.

In the present day, Al spends his days drinking with his policeman friend Ray and mending cars with Tiny. His wife Jacqui grows increasingly unhappy with his obsession and his refusal to sell the yard, fearing for their seven-year-old daughter Georgie, even as Al tries to be a loving father.

Jacqui becomes closer to Ray after attending a party and seeks his advice on her deteriorating relationship with Al. She begins confiding in him and spending more time with Ray, drawn into the family crisis.

Returning home with Georgie, Al finds Jacqui and Ray drinking together and violently beats and rapes her. Jacqui leaves Al, taking Georgie with her, beginning a new chapter apart from him.

Jacqui begins a new life as a French teacher and continues her relationship with Ray. She builds distance from Al and moves toward independence.

Al cannot adjust to the separation and relentlessly tries to see Georgie, but Jacqui denies him contact. After Al takes Georgie rabbit-shooting without telling her, Jacqui files for a protection order, with Tiny voicing concern but deeming it unnecessary.

Al plans a racing comeback, and Jacqui forbids taking Georgie to the race. He destroys part of Jacqui's house with his tow truck and is arrested, and the protective order proceeds through the court.

Al sets up a hideout deep in the bush and kidnaps Georgie at gunpoint, signaling a drastic turn in the conflict. He uses the kidnapping to press his leverage while avoiding immediate capture.

He pushes his tow truck off a cliff into a river to create a diversion for the police. The Armed Offenders Squad locates the wreckage but have no immediate success in rescuing them.

Al and Georgie reconnect in the bush hideout; she reminds him that tomorrow is her birthday. He makes amends by baking her a pie decorated with household candles, a fragile moment of tenderness amid the chaos.

Georgie falls ill, prompting Al to drive into town and rob a pharmacy at gunpoint. He takes the pharmacist hostage and flees back to Smash Palace with Georgie.

Jacqui and Ray arrive at the hostage scene inside a large tool shed. Jacqui defies orders and runs through the cordon to reunite with her husband and daughter, declaring that she still loves Al and proposing they sell the yard and move to Australia.

Al agrees to release the pharmacist in exchange for Ray, hands Georgie back, and forces Ray out to the garage. He traps Ray with a noose made of chicken wire and lets the pharmacist go.

Surrounded by police, Al drives Ray through the wrecking yard and onto the railway tracks in front of an approaching train, in what looks like a murder-suicide attempt. The train switches to the other track at the last minute, missing them, and Al laughs hysterically, implying he knew the outcome.

The film ends on the edge of chaos as Al's obsession with cars and control remains unresolved, with him laughing at the near-death maneuver and the continued danger around Georgie.
