In 1799, New York City police constable Ichabod Crane is sent to the upstate Dutch settlement of Sleepy Hollow, a place haunted by a chilling pattern of decapitations. The victims include wealthy landowner Peter Van Garrett and his son Dirk, as well as a local widow, Emily Winship. Upon arriving, Ichabod is welcomed—reluctantly—by the town elders: Baltus Van Tassel, a powerful businessman; the town doctor, Thomas Lancaster; the Reverend Steenwyck; the notary James Hardenbrook; and magistrate Samuel Philipse. Together they recount a troubling folk tale—that a headless Hessian mercenary from the Revolutionary War rides a black horse in search of his missing head. Ichabod approaches the legend with healthy skepticism, determined to distinguish superstition from evidence.
While staying at the Van Tassel estate, Ichabod becomes intrigued by Baltus’s spiritual daughter, Katrina. His professional curiosity deepens when another body is found: the servant of Van Garrett, Jonathan Masbath. Ichabod takes the young Masbath under his wing, hoping to protect him and glean clues. As the investigation unfolds, the pair exhume the victims at a tip from Philipse, hoping to uncover a connection that might explain the murders. Ichabod witnesses the Horseman strike again, killing Philipse in a dramatic confrontation, which only hardens the sense that something unnatural is at play.
Joined by Young Masbath and Katrina, Ichabod ventures into the Western Woods in search of answers. A crone reveals the location of the Horseman’s grave at the dreaded Tree of the Dead. Digging up the corpse’s grave, they discover the skull is missing, leading Ichabod to conclude that a human hand is controlling the Horseman through his missing head. The discovery tightens the conspiracy in his mind: someone—closely tied to the will that shifts through the Van Garrett and Van Tassel lines—has manipulated the events from behind the scenes.
That very night, the Horseman launches a ruthless rampage, killing the village midwife Beth Killian and her family, and taking Katrina’s would-be suitor Brom when he tries to intervene. Ichabod’s suspicions coalesce into a chilling theory: the attacks target individuals connected to a new will that shifts the Van Garrett estate toward a preferred beneficiary. With Hardenbrook’s confession and a mounting pile of motive, Ichabod deduces that the ultimate mastermind is Baltus—somehow tied to the Van Garrett legacy.
Katrina’s boldness cannot hide the growing danger, and a crucial twist emerges: a diagram Katrina believed to summon the Horseman is actually a protective design, and a post-mortem wound on Lady Van Tassel’s body reveals her true involvement. The truth comes out in a dramatic confrontation within the church: Lady Van Tassel, who has survived by manipulating fear and desire, is revealed to be driven by vengeance for her own impoverished past and the injustices done to her family. Her plan has been to awaken the Horseman to seize both the Van Garrett and Van Tassel estates and to exact retribution on those she blames.
With the elders exposed and the town in turmoil, the Horseman is summoned to fulfill the nefarious plot. Ichabod and Masbath race to the windmill, where a desperate struggle ends with the Horseman’s skull extracted and returned, breaking the curse and severing the enchantment that kept him bound to Lady Van Tassel’s will. Freed of her control, the Horseman spares Katrina and withdraws, dragging Lady Van Tassel away in a final, haunting kiss before returning to Hell.
In the aftermath, Ichabod escorts Katrina and the young Masbath back to safety in New York, carrying with them the weight of what has been uncovered and the fragile hope that the living can recover some measure of peace after the darkness has passed. The tale, now resolved in a hard-won victory over darkness, leaves Sleepy Hollow with a wary sense of relief and a reminder that deceit and ambition can drive even the most ancient legends to terrible, real consequences.
