In a remote, snow-laden valley outside Reno, Nevada, a family—Harry, Mark Heath, his wife Vera, their son Mikey, and daughter Tracy—settles in for a wintry camp along a rugged stretch of river. The peace of the landscape is punctured when a tired, nomadic man named Denton Bromley, who calls himself Pop, rolls up with a trailer and asks to spend the night. Pop spins a troubling tale about his cabin in the woods, where his son Bernie was raised, and about land developers who threatened to raze their home to make way for a resort. He insists Bernie died in an institution, but the story is a ruse: Bernie is very much alive, kept chained in a straitjacket in Pop’s trailer, and he is released at times to stalk wealthy travelers.

That night the calm shatters. Tracy slips away toward the river as Bernie slips into the family’s trailer and murders Harry, Vera, and Mikey. Tracy returns to a grisly scene—her family slain, Pop dead from a heart attack after trying to flee with their microwave—and she escapes into the forest, her breath a pale line in the cold air.

Meanwhile, a separate troupe of wilderness campers arrives at a distant camp under the stern eye of Regis and the offbeat warmth of his girlfriend, Marcie. Bobby and his friend Ron guide the newcomers, while Debbie Harris and others trade stories around a campfire, trading legends about Bernie. The tension intensifies when Bernie, still in disguise, begins moving through the night: he impersonates a camper named P. J., seizing P. J.’s Jeep and driving off along the mountain roads. Tracy’s horror deepens when she encounters the impersonator on the road, and she flees in terror as he closes in on the camp.

In the wilderness camp, Bernie’s slaughter escalates. He first kills Jane, Jane Davidson, and her boyfriend in their tent, the brutality punctuating a night of nervous anticipation. He then tears through the camp with ruthless efficiency, dismembering Marcie in her tent with an axe, severing Regis’s arm, and shooting him with his own gun. He attacks Chet and Vera in the camp’s improvised shower, scalding Vera and hacking Chet to death. The tension at the camp rises as Ron and Debbie move through the night, trying to stay ahead of the killer.

Detective Tom Taylor arrives at the scene of the earlier murders, piecing together a profile of a crazed meth-fueled killer who stalks victims across the mountains. Back at the training camp, Bobby confronts Bernie, who kills him with a knife. Sophie, a witness to the carnage, flees back to the camp but is captured by Bernie. The body count grows, and the visual of Bernie’s victims—tied to a swinging board, a boombox playing campfire songs, with Sophie suspended in a noose—becomes a haunting symbol of the killer’s control over the night.

As dawn approaches, Debbie and Ron make a desperate stand. Debbie manages to shoot Bernie with a shotgun, briefly breaking his spree, while Tom clings to life in the ambulance that carries him away from the mountain. In the final beat of the story, Bernie slips away again, slipping into a police vehicle as the morning light spills over the valley, leaving the survivors to confront the brutal consequences of the night’s horrors.

The film unfolds with a lean, relentless pace, traversing the stark beauty of the snowbound terrain and the creeping dread of an unseen predator. The shifting focus—from a family tragedy to a sprawling camp of hikers and trainees—creates a claustrophobic atmosphere in which trust erodes and violence erupts with a shocking, almost clinical precision. The tension is built through quiet character moments—the wary glances, the uneasy storytelling around the campfire, the sudden, jarring silences—intercut with the brutal, unflinching acts of Bernie as he moves through the landscape like a shadow made flesh.
