Slattery’s Hurricane

Disillusioned with the U.S. Navy after a punishment rather than decoration for a dangerous mission, Lt. Willard Francis “Will” Slattery leaves active duty to become a private pilot for candy magnate R. J. Milne, at the suggestion of his girlfriend, Dolores Grieves, Milne’s secretary. He escapes into a smooth, carefree existence until a chance encounter brings him back into the orbit of a former comrade and a world that still hums with danger and old loyalties.

That encounter comes in the form of his old Navy buddy, Lt. Hobbie Hobson, who remains in uniform and invites him along on a weather flight into the heart of a hurricane. The reunion is tense from the start, because Hobson is married to Slattery’s old flame, Aggie Hobson, a fact Slattery tries to mask with practiced casualness as they share a dinner with Milne and his shady partner, Mr. Gregory. The night stirs old feelings, and before long Slattery schemes to spend more time with Aggie, secretly pursuing a renewed affair while maintaining a fragile façade of cool detachment. The entanglement becomes a triangle of desire, betrayal, and consequence that drags in everyone around them.

Dolores, sensing the betrayal, confronts Slattery and urges him to sever the ties that threaten his career and her own safety. She eventually leaves both Milne and the secret life she’s been forced to witness, quitting her job and risking everything to distance herself from the smuggling web that Milne and Gregory may be connected to. Slattery’s behavior intensifies the conflict; Aggie becomes a focal point of his attempts to prove he can live beyond the old naval discipline, while Dolores’s warning voice lingers in the background as the situation spirals toward crisis.

Meanwhile, Milne collapses during a flight to a remote Caribbean island, and Slattery discovers that Milne is smuggling drugs taped to his chest. Milne dies, and Slattery secretly keeps the “parcel.” Dolores calls, urging him again to get out, but Slattery’s life becomes a tangle of danger, deception, and hard choices. Gregory presses for the recovered evidence, but Slattery hints—through a hidden safe deposit box—that he has more information about the drug-smuggling ring, should anything happen to him.

The Navy unexpectedly awards Slattery the Navy Cross for wartime heroics, a moment that both uplifts him and exposes the emotional toll of his actions. Dolores attends the ceremony and collapses when she sees Slattery embrace Aggie, a moment that signals the fragility of their lives apart from the law. She is later hospitalized for pharmacopsychosis, a crisis that tests Slattery’s ability to do right by those he loves. In a bold, reckless bid to end the affair, Slattery returns the Navy Cross to Dolores and resolves to end things with Aggie. But a drunk and restless Hobby confronts Slattery at Aggie’s, and a fight ensues until orders come for a hurricane mission. Realizing Hobby is too unsteady to fly, Slattery knocks him out to spare him a doomed flight, then seizes Hobby’s plane and vaults into the cyclone.

Inside the storm, Slattery keeps his eyes on the prize: he flies into the eye to locate the weather system and to report the hurricane’s position, a critical warning that helps save Miami from severe damage. Yet the mission takes a brutal turn—one engine fails, and as he radios the tower about the hidden drug-information, the plane crashes. Against the odds, Slattery survives and is welcomed back to active duty while reconciliation with Dolores becomes possible again. In the end, the fragile balance of love, duty, and danger threads through his choices, suggesting that even a man who survives the fiercest storms can still find a way to repair the harm he’s caused and rebuild a life with the people who matter most.
