What Happens in Hurricane: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Hurricane (1979) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

On the island of Alava during the 1920s, Mia Farrow plays Charlotte, an American painter who travels from Boston to visit her father, Jason Robards as Captain Charles Bruckner, the U.S. Congress-sanctioned governor who rules with a stern, patrician hand and a patronizing attitude toward the native population. Charlotte is taken aback by his rigid adherence to the law and the colonial order that governs life on the island.

Seeking mercy for Matangi, a native man who stole a boat "for love," Charlotte tries to intervene on his behalf. Dayton Ka'ne, who plays Matangi, is initially met with Bruckner's disdain, and the governor refuses to overturn the penalty, reprimanding the young man, much to Charlotte's dismay.

Matangi is soon appointed the high chief of the island, a development that challenges Bruckner's authority and complicates his view of the U.S. forces and local governance. Matangi resists blindly following the edicts that come from outside authorities if they harm his people's welfare, quietly angering the governor.

Charlotte hopes to stay for a month, under the watch of missionaries on Alava: Max von Sydow as Dr. Danielsson and Trevor Howard as Father Malone. Despite Captain Bruckner's jealousy over his daughter's attraction to Matangi, he agrees to extend the stay and sails off for the month. During this time, Charlotte and Matangi quickly become lovers.

When Bruckner discovers the affair, he has Matangi arrested on a trumped-up charge. Matangi escapes with Charlotte's help, highlighting the clash between local autonomy and colonial authority. As tensions simmer, a giant hurricane finally strikes, threatening the island and the fragile ties between its people and their rulers.

Hurricane Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Hurricane (1979): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Matangi steal a boat for love?

Matangi steals a boat for someone he loves, though the summary doesn't specify who. This act of desperation leads to his initial punishment, but it also demonstrates his willingness to defy authority for emotional reasons, setting up his later role as a leader who prioritizes love and loyalty over colonial law.

Foreshadowing: The boat theft occurs early and directly leads to Charlotte meeting Matangi, foreshadowing how his romantic nature will drive the central conflict.

Q2

Why does Captain Bruckner refuse to show mercy on Matangi?

Bruckner maintains rigid adherence to law and order, viewing mercy as weakness that would undermine colonial authority. His stern, patrician attitude toward the native population prevents him from softening the penalty, even when his own daughter pleads on Matangi's behalf.

Foreshadowing: This refusal establishes Bruckner as an immovable force of authority, directly setting up the clash that defines the movie's second half.

  • bruckner
  • matangi
  • mercy
  • colonial authority
  • law
Q3

Why is Matangi appointed high chief after being punished?

Despite his punishment for stealing the boat, Matangi gains recognition as a natural leader among the native population. His appointment as high chief represents a shift in local power dynamics, elevating him to a position where he can challenge Bruckner's authority directly and advocate for his people's welfare.

Foreshadowing: This elevation creates the political tension that escalates throughout the movie, putting Matangi in direct opposition to the governor.

Q4

Why does Bruckner agree to let Charlotte stay for a month?

Despite his growing jealousy over Charlotte's attraction to Matangi, Bruckner agrees to extend her stay. The summary suggests he sails off for the month, perhaps believing his absence will defuse the situation or that the missionaries will keep Charlotte in line. His decision removes direct supervision and ironically accelerates the romance.

Foreshadowing: Bruckner's departure creates the opportunity for Charlotte and Matangi's relationship to flourish, directly leading to the affair's discovery.

Q5

What triggers Matangi's arrest after the affair begins?

When Bruckner discovers Charlotte's romantic relationship with Matangi, he uses his power to have Matangi arrested on fabricated charges. This retaliation represents the ruthless use of colonial authority to control personal lives and eliminate the native leader who threatens his position.

Foreshadowing: The arrest marks the point where personal conflict becomes political conflict, pushing both lovers toward defiance.

Q6

How does Charlotte help Matangi escape arrest?

Charlotte aids Matangi's escape from custody, using her position as the governor's daughter to undermine colonial authority. Her act of defiance directly challenges her father's power and chooses her lover over family loyalty, escalating the central conflict between personal desire and patriarchal rule.

Foreshadowing: This escape transforms their relationship from forbidden romance to active rebellion against the colonial system.

Q7

Why does the hurricane strike at the story's climax?

The hurricane arrives as both the interpersonal and political tensions reach their boiling point. It serves as a natural force that threatens everyone on the island regardless of their allegiances, testing the resolve of both natives and colonial authorities. The disaster becomes a catalyst for potential reconciliation or destruction.

Foreshadowing: The storm has been looming in the narrative as a constant threat, and its arrival forces all characters to confront the consequences of their actions.

Q8

What political tension exists between Matangi and the U.S. forces?

As high chief, Matangi refuses to blindly follow U.S. edicts that harm his people's welfare, challenging Bruckner's authority. This creates friction between native autonomy and American colonial governance, representing the larger struggle between indigenous leadership and occupying forces that defines the movie's political subtext.

Foreshadowing: This tension builds from the moment Matangi is appointed and escalates with each act of resistance against colonial orders.

Q9

Why is Charlotte attracted to Matangi?

Charlotte is drawn to Matangi despite, or because of, her father's rigid control. Her empathy toward the native population and her artistic sensitivity likely make her resonate with Matangi's passion and authenticity. The forbidden nature of the romance, combined with her rebellion against her father's colonial mindset, intensifies their connection.

Foreshadowing: Charlotte's early plea for Matangi's mercy establishes her compassion, which evolves into deeper romantic and political alignment.

Q10

What happens to Charlotte and Matangi after the hurricane?

The summary deliberately leaves their fate uncertain, though the hurricane serves as both literal and symbolic climax. The storm tests whether their love survives the ultimate trial and whether reconciliation between natives and colonists becomes possible. Their escape from colonial authority earlier positions them to face the disaster together, but the outcome remains unresolved in the provided text.

Foreshadowing: The hurricane represents the movie's final challenge, where all conflicts, romantic, political, and natural, converge for resolution.
