Princess Elisabeth, Romy Schneider nicknamed “Sissi,” is the second oldest daughter of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria and Duchess Ludovika of Bavaria. She grows up with her seven siblings at Possenhofen Castle on the shores of Lake Starnberg in Bavaria, where she enjoys a carefree, impulsive, and nature-loving childhood free from the usual constraints of royal life. Sissi remains largely unaware of the deeper purpose of the visit as she spends her days in the countryside and in moments of quiet laughter with her mother and sister, her spirit undaunted by the formal pressures pressing in from all directions.

Sissi’s path crosses with Franz Joseph when fate brings them together during a mountain excursion. They meet as arranged in the Alpine highlands, where the emperor, who does not yet reveal his royal identity, finds himself drawn to her vitality and charm. On that hunting trip, the two talk and become acquainted, and Sissi falls in love with him, all the while concealing her true identity and the potential implications of their meeting. The budding romance is tender and impulsive, set against a landscape of rugged peaks and clear skies.

Back at Possenhofen, the truth behind the trip becomes clearer: the emperor’s arrival has brought with it the possibility of an alliance. Néné’s future, and the future of Sissi’s family, weigh heavily on Sissi’s decisions. A new guest, the Prince of Lippe, arrives to join the festivities, and Archduchess Sophie invites Sissi to accompany her as a partner at the Emperor’s birthday celebration. The tension between loyalty to family and personal love intensifies as the day of the birthday party approaches.

At the birthday celebration, Franz Joseph confronts the reality of Sissi’s identity and makes a bold move. He openly expresses his feelings and asks her to marry him, despite the complications and reservations raised by his mother and the surrounding court. Sissi, torn by loyalty to her sister, initially resists the engagement, but the Emperor’s determination cannot be easily dismissed. The moment crystallizes a turning point in their lives, shifting the balance of power and affection within the family.

In Possenhofen, preparations for a wedding begin, and Sissi finds herself ambivalent about a future she never anticipated. Néné returns with a new suitor, Maximilian Anton, Hereditary Prince of Thurn and Taxis, which temporarily changes the emotional landscape for the sisters. Yet the bonds between them endure, even as new paths begin to diverge.

The journey toward union continues as Sissi travels with her family from Possenhofen to Vienna aboard the steamboat Franz Joseph. Spectators line the Danube banks, cheering and waving as the future empress makes her grand entrance into the imperial capital. A gilded carriage carries her through the city, and a formal wedding ceremony follows in the Augustinian Church on 24 April 1854, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Sissi’s life and the broader history of the Austrian Empire.
